Join a round of Escape with our friends from Atomic Empire and experience the latest in virtual reality technology with the gang from Red Storm Entertainment. Scientists will help explain everything from invisibility to super senses, prizes for the best costume and themed cocktails will ensure everyone is in the mood for fun. North Carolina Museum of Natural History October 22, 7:00-8:30 p.m. Science fiction has inspired numerous people to pursue careers in science. It’s also helped society grapple with change, exploring subjects like space exploration, genetic engineering, and constant surveillance, decades before these technologies arrived. On the other hand, starting with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, fiction frequently portrays scientists as arrogant, meddling with forces they can’t control. Science fiction also mixes pseudoscience and outright magic into stories, perhaps contributing to scientific illiteracy. Are stories of fantastic futures merely wishful distractions, or does science fiction inspire reality? Does the good done by the genre outweigh the bad? Or has science fiction written too many checks that science can’t cash? Join three local science fiction authors for an evening to discuss and answer the question, Is Science Fiction Good for Science? Science Cafe: 3D Printing and Orthopedic Surgery October 29, 7:00-8:30 p.m. The popularity and complexity of 3D printing is expanding and medical applications are growing. 3D printing has clear benefits in orthopedic surgery because 3D-printed implants can have shapes that match the shapes of the bone and tissues they are replacing. The mechanical properties of 3D-printed implants can be tweaked by making implants porous. Features can be added to implants to articulate them with other implants and reattach tendons and ligaments. 3D printing has also allowed orthopedic clinicians to replicate bones and joints using polymers. These polymer replicas enhance the understanding of complex deformities and can be used to rehearse surgical procedures. Thursdays, November 5-December 3, 6 p.m. Living birds move quickly, which makes it difficult to see how they’re really built. Students will study bird anatomy using the Museum’s specimens. We will break down the steps for drawing features accurately with graphite pencil. I welcome novice artists and those with advanced skills, as our focus will be on capturing form. Supplies provided by the Museum.

| Big Science: Ernest Lawrence and the Invention that Launched the Military... by Michael HiltzikIn this engaging biography, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Michael Hiltzik introduces Berkeley researcher Ernest Orlando Lawrence, whose 1930 invention of the cyclotron (a type of particle accelerator) revolutionized the nascent field of nuclear physics. The invention launched industrial-scale scientific research that would result in innovations such as the atomic bomb, the space program, and the Large Hadron Collider. It also inextricably linked scientific research to the military-industrial complex. In addition to placing Lawrence in his scientific and historical contexts, Hiltzik discusses the impact of the shift from pure to applied research, wherein big investments must increasingly yield big returns. |

| The Vital Question: Energy, Evolution, and the Origins of Complex Life by Nick LaneIn the 350 years since we identified cells, we have yet to discover exactly how they came to be and why they do what they do. And it is this "evolutionary black hole" that biochemist Nick Lane attempts to explain in this thought-provoking book. | Spirals in Time: The Secret Life and Curious Afterlife of Seashells by Helen ScalesDeep in the basement of London's Natural History museum lurks what the curators call the "cabinet of horrors," containing (among other items) garish decorations made of seashells -- the sort that beachgoers might purchase as souvenirs. Not only are such objects tacky, maintains author and marine biologist Helen Scales, they also represent an incredible waste of some extraordinary creatures. From microscopic plankton to giant mollusks (which have survived multiple mass extinction events over millions of years), many marine organisms make and use shells. Considering both the shells and the creatures within, Scales reflects on their ecological roles as well as their contributions to art, medicine, and industry. |
