Silence
by Mercedes Lackey
Teenager Staci's father has just remarried, and now she finds herself being shunted aside by her new stepmother. Shunted all the way to the run-down and dying Maine town of Silence, in fact, and the custody of her alcoholic mother.
It gets worse. Silence seems to be stuck in the proverbial stone age. There's no cell phone service except at the very top of a bluff outside of town, no internet except dialup, and not one familiar franchise or business. Staci's mom seems to have gotten even "worse" since the last time Staci lived with her. The only bright spots in the whole place are a friendly waitress at the diner, and a bookstore where she meets a gaggle of geeks and gamers.
But all is not as it seems in Silence. There are strange things moving beneath the shabby surface, terrible plots in play, and deadly players in the game, and Staci is about to find herself caught up in the middle of it all.

But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the Home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of things. No matter the cost.

by Dave Freer
Teenager Tim Ryan comes into his own as he faces danger on a remote Australia island where magic lurks in land and sea.
Tim Ryan can't shake the feeling that he is "different" from other teens, and not in a good way. For one thing, he seems to have his own personal poltergeist that causes fires and sets him up to be arrested for shoplifting.
As a result Tim has been sent to live on a rundown farm on a remote island off the coast of Australia with his crazy grandmother, a woman who seems to talk to the local spirits, and who refuses to cushion Tim from facing his difficulties. To make matters worse, Tim is expected to milk cows, chase sheep, and hunt fish with a spear.
But he's been exiled to an island alive with ancient magic land magic that Tim can feel in his bones, and sea magic that runs in his blood. If Tim can face down the danger from drug-runners, sea storms, and the deadly threat of a seal woman who wishes to steal him away for a lingering death in the land of Faery, he may be able to claim the mysterious changeling heritage that is his birthright, and take hold of a legacy of power beyond any he has ever imagined.

The last days of magic
by Mark Tompkins
What became of magic in the world? Who needed to do away with it, and for what reasons?
Aisling, a goddess in human form, was born to rule both domains and with her twin, Anya unite the Celts with the powerful faeries of the Middle Kingdom. But within medieval Ireland interests are divided, and far from its shores greater forces are mustering. Both England and Rome have a stake in driving magic from the Emerald Isle. Jordan, the Vatican commander tasked with vanquishing the remnants of otherworldly creatures from a disenchanted Europe, has built a career on such plots. But increasingly he finds himself torn between duty and his desire to understand the magic that has been forbidden.
As kings prepare, exorcists gather, and divisions widen between the warring clans of Ireland, Aisling and Jordan must come to terms with powers given and withheld, while a world that can still foster magic hangs in the balance. Loyalties are tested, betrayals sown, and the coming war will have repercussions that ripple centuries later, in today’s world and in particular for a young graduate student named Sara Hill.

Chaos choreography
by Seanan McGuire
Verity Price is back on the West Coast and getting back into the swing of the family business: cryptozoology. She's rescuing cryptids from bad situations, protecting them from monster-hunters, and generally risking life and limb for the greater good, with her ex-Covenant partner/husband, Dominic, by her side. Her ballroom dance career is behind her...or so she thinks.
When Verity gets the call from the producers of "Dance or Die," the reality show she almost won several years before, she finds the lure of a comeback impossible to resist, and she and Dominic are off to L.A. for one last shot at the big time.
Of course, nothing is that simple. When two of her fellow contestants turn up dead, Verity will need every ally she can find and a couple she wasn't looking for in order to navigate the complicated steps of both the tango and a murderinvestigation without blowing her cover. It doesn't help that her official family backup is her grandmother, Alice Price-Healy, who thinks "subtle" is something that happens to other people.
Winning this competition may have just become a matter of life and death.

The Diabolical Miss Hyde by Viola CarrSteampunk. Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel, this series opener introduces Eliza, daughter of the infamous Henry Jekyll. Like her father, Eliza is a doctor -- though unlike her murderous parent, she works for the police as a crime scene investigator. She's also got an alter ego: the impulsive Lizzie Hyde. As if chasing down serial killers weren't enough of a challenge, Eliza must also protect Lizzie (and herself) from Captain Remy Lafayette of the Royal Society, which distinguishes between science (the law of the realm) and sorcery (punishable by death). If you enjoy The Diabolical Miss Hyde, don't miss its sequel, The Devious Dr. Jekyll.

The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack by Mark HodderSteampunk. When the supposedly mythical Spring-Heeled Jack starts terrorizing 1861 London, it's up to explorer and adventurer Sir Richard Francis Burton to track down the monster. Accompanied by his louche and libidinous sidekick, poet Algernon Swinburne, Burton tracks the beast and attempts to thwart a werewolf invasion by enlisting the help of everyone who was anyone in 19th-century Britain, except Queen Victoria (sorry, she was assassinated). With its steampunk-inflected world, nifty technology (complete with pneumatic railways), and time travel hijinks, this inventive fusion of fantasy, mystery, classic literature, and historical fiction will delight fans of Alan Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

King of the Cracksmen: A Steampunk Entertainment by Dennis O'FlahertySteampunk. Sometimes, the luck of the Irish runs out. When Liam McCool, dubbed "King of the Cracksmen" by his fellow safecrackers, is caught and arrested, he's given a choice: go to prison for a very long time or become an informant for the government. Partnering with muckracking journalist Becky Fox, Liam discovers a conspiracy involving former U.S. Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton, who now runs the powerful Department of Public Safety, enforcing harsh laws with an army of automatons. Set in an alternate Reconstruction-era United States, one in which Lincoln was never assassinated and Russia controls most of the territory west of the Mississippi River, this novel may appeal to Cherie Priest's Clockwork Century series.
