Mad About MysteriesWednesday, November 12, 7:00 pm
This month we're reading any book from the Judge Dee series by Robert Van Gulik. Van Gulik’s mysteries follow in the long tradition of Chinese detective fiction, intentionally preserving a number of key elements of that writing culture. Most notably, he had Judge Dee solve three different (and sometimes unrelated) cases in each book, a traditional device in Chinese mysteries. Patrons can choose from the seventeen novels in the series!

Simpson Book of the Month ClubMonday, November 17, 7:00 pm
This month we're reading Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. When World War II began, Louis Zamperini became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. Against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

The Word NerdsTuesday, November 18, 6:00 pm
This month we're reading The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. In the world of the near future, who will control women's bodies? Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are only valued if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the days before, when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now.
