Wednesday, November 9, 7:00 pm This month we're reading The Private Patient by P. D. James. Cheverell Manor is a private clinic belonging to the famous plastic surgeon George Chandler-Powell. When investigative journalist Rhoda Gradwyn arrived there one late autumn afternoon, she had every expectation of a successful operation and a pleasant week recuperating. Two days later she was dead. To Commander Adam Dalgliesh, who with his team is called in to investigate the case, few things about this mystery make sense. Yet as the detectives begin probing the lives and backgrounds of those connected with the dead woman—the surgeon, members of the manor staff, close acquaintances—suspects multiply all too rapidly. Then there is a second murder, and Dalgliesh finds himself confronted by issues even more challenging than innocence or guilt.

This month we're reading Empire Falls by Richard Russo. Miles Roby has been slinging burgers at the Empire Grill for 20 years, a job that cost him his college education and much of his self-respect. What keeps him there? It could be his sensitive daughter Tick, who needs his help surviving the local high school. Or maybe it’s Janine, Miles’ soon-to-be ex-wife, who’s taken up with a vain health-club proprietor. Or perhaps it’s the imperious Francine Whiting, who owns everything in town and seems to believe that “everything” includes Miles himself. In Empire Falls, Richard Russo delves deep into the blue-collar heart of America in a work that overflows with hilarity, heartache, and grace.

For November, our lobby display case features glass insulators. These are the glass caps that started to appear on telegraph and telephone lines around the 1850’s. They are a very popular and striking antique item to collect. Our library patron, Gus Stafford, has brought in a sampling of his collection as well as historical photographs, maps, and reference books. The insulators are displayed to represent some of the common ways to collect: manufacturer, country, color, shapes, and style. Brochures are also available for the National Insulator Association Scholarship Fund which is an organization to encourage growth and public awareness of the insulator hobby through collecting, dealing, and educational endeavors.

TumbleBooks gives you and your child a fun and safe way to read ebooks together. Click on the cover of a book, and follow along as the book is animated and narrated. Colorful tabs at the top of the page allow you to choose what type of book you want to read, and some include a National Geographic video to watch or game to play on the same topic. If you find a lot of books to read, save them to your favorites or make them into a playlist and listen to one after the other. Get access to this fun database under the “Collections and Services” menu on our website.
