Non-profit organizations are typically governed by a Board of Trustees or Directors. These volunteers lend their time, talent, and treasure to support an organization that means something special to them. The Joseph T. Simpson Public Library has two boards – a Board of Trustees that governs library operations, and also a Friends Board that runs the Friends of the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library. I was recently reminded of the long-term impact that board volunteers can have on an organization. Simpson Library lost two board members this fall with the passing of Foster Berkheimer and David Coover. These men served on the library board for many years. Their labor of love helped our library get to where we are today and for that I am truly grateful. Foster served on the library board from 1991-2010, and served as president and chairman of the library’s building expansion committees in 1996 and 2003. Dave served on the board in 1982-1983, then again from 1994-2014 and was treasurer from 1997-2012. Both Foster and Dave were on the board’s Executive Director search committee in 1996 when I was hired and I appreciated their faith and confidence in selecting me for the position which I continue to pour my heart and soul into every day. These men were not only instrumental in the library’s success, they were equally impactful on many other organizations in the Mechanicsburg community. True believers in giving back, they are a perfect example of anthropologist Margaret Mead’s famous quote “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.” Rest in peace, Foster and Dave. You are an inspiration to many and have touched countless people during your life. Also, thank you to our current and former trustees and Friends Board members. Each of you play an important role in the library’s success and the Mechanicsburg community reaps the benefits of your service and support. Sue Erdman, Executive Director 717-766-0171

Library story time programs encourage children to develop a love of reading by presenting them with stories and activities in a fun, energetic environment. When kids see others excited about reading, it sets a positive example and encourages them to pick up books on their own. Rhyme Time, Toddler Time, and Story Time are presented several times a week throughout the year -- registration is not required; join us when you can. Family Story Time is presented once a week on Mondays at 6:30 pm, and registration is required. Visit our Story Time Events Calendar to view the current schedule. Please note: There are no children's programs January 1-13, 2019 due to renovations occurring in our programming rooms. Programs resume on January 14, 2019. If you value the importance of early literacy, we hope you will consider sponsoring a Story Time. You can sponsor for a week, a month, or even a year! For more information, and to get pricing information for each sponsorship level, download our Story Time Sponsor Brochure. |

In January, the lobby display is presented by members of our Tea and Stitches Group. Tea and Stitches is one of our longest, consistently running programs, with attendance of 30 or more stitchers every week! The items in the display case represent a small sampling of just some of what these talented ladies have created this past year. Their work is always inspirational and of beautiful quality. The group meets every Tuesday from 10:00 am to noon in the lower level. Don’t worry if you are not at this level -- there is much you can learn from this group of friendly ladies.
