On September 29, Simpson Library hosted a “Creating Community Connections” breakfast and invited representatives from several nonprofit organizations to meet and share information about their organization, what they do, who they serve, events they sponsor, services they provide, recent accomplishments, and current challenges. We were delighted to have 14 organizations represented at this first-time event. The enthusiasm, passion, and energy from the group was inspiring and everyone learned something new about organizations in the Mechanicsburg area.
A common theme for all organizations is the challenge in recruiting volunteers, people to serve on nonprofit boards, and people willing to take on leadership responsibilities. Mechanicsburg has many community organizations doing incredible work. How can you help? What talents can you share with others? If you would like contact information for any of the organizations who were in attendance at this event, listed below in alphabetical order, (of course!), please email me at serdman@ccpa.net and I will put you in touch with the person who was at the event. We hope to make this an annual event and anticipate inviting additional organizations in the future. - Crimewatch

Mad About Mysteries Wednesday, October 14, 7:00 pm This month we are reading A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters. In the remote Welsh mountain village of Gwytherin lies the grave of Saint Winifred. Now, in 1137, the ambitious head of Shrewsbury Abbey has decided to acquire the sacred remains for his Benedictine order. Native Welshman Brother Cadfael is sent on the expedition to translate and finds the rustic villagers of Gwytherin passionately divided by the Benedictine's offer for the saint's relics. He isn't surprised when this taste for bones leads to bloody murder. Brother Cadfael knows a carnal hand did the killing. But he doesn't know that his plan to unearth a murderer may dig up a case of love and justice...where the wages of sin may be scandal or Cadfael's own ruin.

Simpson Book Club Monday, October 19, 7:00 pm This month we're reading The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. A London lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and the evil Edward Hyde. The work is commonly associated with the rare mental condition often spuriously called "split personality", referred to in psychiatry as dissociative identity disorder, where within the same body there exists more than one distinct personality. In this case, there are two personalities within Dr. Jekyll, one apparently good and the other evil.

The Word Nerds Tuesday, October 20, 6:00 pm This month we're reading The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson. Once a century, one person is chosen for greatness. Elisa is the chosen one. But she is also the younger of two princesses. Now, on her sixteenth birthday, she has become the secret wife of a handsome and worldly king—a king whose country is in turmoil. A king who needs her to be the chosen one, not a failure of a princess. And he's not the only one who seeks her. Savage enemies, seething with dark magic, are hunting her. A daring, determined revolutionary thinks she could be his people's savior. Soon it is not just her life but her very heart that is at stake. Elisa could be everything to those who need her most. If the prophecy is fulfilled. If she finds the power deep within herself. If she doesn't die young. Most of the chosen do.

The library display case for October is provided by the Mechanicsburg General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) which is an organization of volunteers seeking to advance the welfare of their community while developing the educational, social and civic interests of its members. GFWC Mechanicsburg is a proud supporter of the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library, the Mechanicsburg Museum Association, New Hope Ministries, Head Start of Carlisle, Children's Miracle Network, and the Domestic Violence Center of Cumberland and Perry Counties. A portion of their display highlights the “Mystery Art Auction Benefit” on October 10th to benefit the Cumberland/Perry Domestic Violence Shelter. The shelter needs a new kitchen, and 100% of the proceeds from this auction will be donated to the kitchen fund. GFWC Mechanicsburg meets the first Tuesday of each month from September through June at 7:00 PM at the Trindle Spring Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg. The last week of October, The Magic Club of Mechanicsburg will display items commemorating Harry Houdini’s birthday.
