The Friends of Simpson Library subscribe to Book Page, a monthly publication featuring new books. Each month the latest issue is placed in our lobby for people to take home and peruse new titles to add to their TBR (to be read) lists. As a companion to Book Page, two free online subscriptions are also available. The First Look Book Club is a daily email featuring excerpts of the best just-published mysteries, suspense, literary fiction, memoirs, and more. Sign up now! Sunday, December 6, 12:30 - 5:00 pm Kick off this holiday season with the 21st Annual Holly Trail House Tour, hosted by the Friends of the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library. Experience some local history and architecture while discovering new holiday decorating ideas. Homes will be decorated for the holidays and filled with the spirit of the season. Please join us for this not-to-be-missed event! All proceeds benefit our Library. Tickets can be purchased at the library - $15 in advance, and $20 the day of the tour. Improve Your Photo Skills Wednesday, December 2, 7:00 pm Learn how to take better pictures! Your instructor will teach you the basic concepts of good photography; explaining the most common problems that photographers encounter and how to avoid them. This class is specifically designed for people of all ages who are new to photography regardless of the type of camera they use. It will also be a solid review for the casual shooter. This program will be presented by Dennis Baker, an experienced, professional educator and photographer who will use lots of photos to illustrate the concepts. Thursday, December 3, 7:00 pm Learn to knit @ the library! This is a program to teach those interested how to knit or crochet. After learning the beginning stitches, there are easy patterns for making a scarf or hat or making stuffed figures as in the Japanese art of Amigurumi. Anyone working on a project who needs help is welcome to come and our knitting and crochet teachers will help solve the problem. We have plenty of donated yarn, and we can supply knitting needles or crochet hooks if you need them. Register at the library or by calling 766-0171.

This teen club meets to play the card game Magic: The Gathering. The club is led by Zachary Davis who is available to answer questions and teach. Light refreshments are provided. Come out for a fun and exciting evening of trivia to see which team is the smartest in the library! The winning team will be awarded a book and gift card for each member. Wednesday, December 16, 7:00 pm Come and enjoy a relaxing evening during the busy holiday season. We will be crafting festive ornaments with a literary theme. Don’t worry, there will be glitter involved and they will sparkle on your tree! Each participant will be given supplies to make two ornaments. Thursday, December 17, 7:00 pm Teens, put your Star Wars knowledge to the test and win prizes! Participants compete in teams of four and the winning team members will receive AMC Theatre gift cards. Cook the Book Friday, December 18, 12:30 pm Do you enjoy sampling and sharing new dishes? Then hang on to your chef’s hat! We pick the cookbooks; you choose and make a recipe. This is a special lunchtime program at the library. If you are interested in participating, please visit the library to register. Phone and online registrations are not being taken for this class because of the recipe component. We will have the pre-chosen cookbooks available for you to browse and choose a recipe. We will make a copy of the recipe for you and place a post-it note in the book to designate that recipe is taken. Then you just make the dish and bring it on December 18th to share!

This club is for teens aged 11-18 and meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month from September through May. Teens will have a challenge for each month and bring an original creation built to meet the challenge. Teens are encouraged to bring extra bricks for a time of building in groups. Mad About Mysteries Wednesday, December 6, 7:00 pm This month we are reading Santa Cruise: A Holiday Mystery at Sea by Mary Higgins Clark. Alvirah Meehan, the lottery winner turned amateur sleuth, and her husband Willy, private detective Regan Reilly, her new husband Jack, and Regan's parents are all guests on the Royal Mermaid's maiden voyage, the Santa Cruise. What the guests don't know is that two escaping criminals have been smuggled on board. The hoped-for tranquility quickly vanishes when an attempt is made on the life of a feeble passenger. As the Royal Mermaid sails on through troubled waters, Alvirah, Regan and Jack are uncovering clues that lead them to dangerous criminals.

Simpson Book Club Monday, December 21, 7:00 pm This month we're reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. We know Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, not only as fictional characters, but also as icons of the true meaning of Christmas in a world still plagued with avarice and cynicism. A Christmas Carol is a novella by English author Charles Dickens published in December 1843. This book tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation resulting from a supernatural visit by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come.

This month our lobby display features collections from Barb Bressler. Barb is a lifelong Mechanicsburg area resident and is a collector of all things Christmas! Her personal collection has been featured in many local places, including Mechanicsburg Museum, Bethany Village, Messiah College Library, and New Cumberland Public Library. Barb will concentrate on featuring Santas and Snowmen. Materials for the items cover a large spectrum; there will be clay, cotton batting, glass, gourds, metal, resin, fabric, and more. Her collections will also have a sampling of items from AnnaLee, Jim Shore, Lenox, Russian Nesting Dolls or Matreshka, and Precious Moments. Don’t miss this exciting and festive collection! Items on display are not for sale.
