Simpson Library is looking for volunteers to assist with a new program starting on Monday, January 22 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. The English Conversation group will meet on the fourth Monday each month. This group is designed for new English speakers who will come together to converse about different everyday topics like TV shows, sports, food, weather, education, etc. and practice their English speaking skills. Volunteers are need to talk with attendees so they can practice speaking and listen to native English speakers. The group will be led by Penny Barnes who is an adjunct professor at HACC in ESL and a private tutor. Sunday, December 3, 12:30 - 6:00 pm Kick off this holiday season with the 23rd Annual Holly Trail House Tour, hosted by the Friends of the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library. Experience some local history and architecture while discovering new holiday decorating ideas. Homes will be decorated for the holidays and filled with the spirit of the season. Please join us for this not-to-be-missed event! All proceeds benefit our Library. Tickets can be purchased at the library, $15 in advance and $20 the day of the tour. On the fourth Tuesday of each month, we meet until 5:00 pm for an Extended Edition but our extended edition in December will be on the third Tuesday, December 19. Simpson Library is forming a new club for teens in grades 6 to 12: the Simpson Adventurer’s Guild, which meets on the third Thursday of the month. Teen LEGO Club Tuesday, December 26, 6:30 pm This club is for teens aged 11 to 18 and meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month year round. Teens will have a challenge for each month and bring an original creation built to meet the challenge. Teens are encouraged to bring extra bricks for a time of building in groups. Yoga for Seniors & BeginnersWednesday, December 27, 7:00 pm This class meets monthly on the fourth Wednesday. It is open to all levels of practitioner and is offered in a relaxed and open atmosphere, without judgment. Yoga is a noncompetitive activity, accepting of all ages and skill levels. You will need to bring a yoga mat, beach towel, or other exercise mat, wear comfortable clothing, preferably in layers (room is cool), and be able to sit on the floor. Online Resources for Continuing Education You have probably heard there are thousands of educational resources online, but how do you find the good ones? We have done the work of finding the best *free* educational websites and compiled them for you in one place. If you want to learn a new language, try DuoLingo. Take college classes for free on Coursera, MIT Open Courseware, or Udacity. Keep up with the kids and learn computer coding with codecademy. Khan Academy provides instructional videos for all ages, covering science, math, engineering, technology, and more. At GCF Learn Free, you will find tutorials on Microsoft Office products, social media, and internet basics.
