Every day is a new adventure at the library and it's no wonder that time flies by with all the activities in which we are involved. A few highlights from April include: 1. Talking with parents and children at Mechanicsburg Area School District's kindergarten registration to introduce them to our free early literacy programs. 2. Talking with attendees at the Earth Day Festival sponsored by the Downtown Mechanicsburg Partnership about library programs and services. Over 300 children and 300 adults stopped by the library booth to pick up information and talk with our library ambassadors. 3. Thanking our major donors to the library with a thank you reception. 4. Serving as the location for Mechanicsburg Rotary's A Taste of Mechanicsburg fundraiser with a portion of the proceeds supporting the library. Restaurants provided delicious samples of culinary delights and attendees enjoyed festive music while wandering through our beautiful library tasting a variety of foods. 5. Hosting a community conversation talking with residents about their views and hopes for our community. 6. Our Development Coordinator, Dawna Trump, appeared on Good Day PA to promote our online auction fundraiser which raised $20,000. 7. A dine out at T. J. Rockwell's raised $424.85 and the Shop for a Cause day at Ashcombe's raised $312.74 for the Friends of the Library. 8. Young Adult Programmer Jennifer Knechtmann gave a presentation at Mechanicsburg Middle School's Career Day on what it is like to be a librarian. 9. A thank you reception was held for our awesome library volunteers. Summer is just around the corner which means its time to join our Summer Learning Program. Registration opens on May 14 and the program officially starts on June 2 with our kickoff celebration. Children, teens, and adults are welcome to join our program, attend fun programs, win prizes, and read, read, read! Please join us. Sue Erdman, Executive Director 717-766-0171

Performed by Michèle LaRue, left Photo credit: Ken Smith of Quiet Hearth Images American women won the right to vote in 1920 -- but it took them 72 long years! As we near the centennial of Woman Suffrage and face the challenges that still remain, it’s astonishing -- and fun -- to look back at women’s arguments AGAINST voting. Someone Must Wash the Dishes: An Anti-Suffrage Satire, does just that: “Woman suffrage is the reform against nature,” declares its unlikely, but irresistibly likeable, heroine. “Ladies, get what you want. Pound pillows. Make a scene. Make home a hell on earth -- but do it in a womanly way! That is so much more dignified and refined than walking up to a ballot box and dropping in a piece of paper!” The program is free, but registration is required. Register at the library or calling 717-766-0171.
