Wednesday, March 15, 6:30 pm Do you enjoy watching “Antiques Roadshow” and wonder what that item you found at the flea market is worth? Well, now is your time to find out! We are offering our own version of “Antiques Roadshow” hosted by Cordier Auctions and Appraisals of Harrisburg. Cordier will appraise your item in an open session for $5 per item or 3 for $10. Because of time constraints, we are asking attendees to limit themselves to 3 items. Even if you do not have an item to appraise, this should be a very entertaining event as the session will be presented openly for audience enjoyment. The program is free unless you bring an item for appraisal. Registration is required. Register at the library or by calling 766-0171.

11:00 am – 2:00 pm For the past couple years, the Federal Government has been reducing the forms they are sending to the library in order for folks to do their own taxes. There has been a big push for everyone to file electronically. What if you do not have a computer or do not feel proficient enough to file electronically? What if those forms are available through the Federal Government, if only you knew the secret to accessing them? A tax professional from HR Block will be at the library to answer questions and give guidance on how to access these forms. The service is free, no registration is required, and assistance is first come, first served.

New Policy for Cumberland County Libraries
|
|
Starting March 1, 2017, the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library, along with the other libraries in the Cumberland County Library System, will require a zero balance on library accounts. Customers must pay all fees and overdue fines in order to check out materials, log on to our public computers, or access databases and OverDrive eBooks. Public libraries in Cumberland County strive to be good stewards of community resources. Ask staff for advice to manage your account and avoid fines. Our libraries offer a free and unique place to meet, learn, and be enriched. All income from fees and overdue fines goes toward enhancing materials and services at your local library.

Beginning around March 6, our lobby display this month is by local award-winning artist Joseph John Dudding. Joseph has brought in a collection of his drawings that feature a very ancient technique called “silverpoint”. Every piece was created just with the metal tip of a stylus rather than pencil. This technique was used before the invention of pencil lead and Leonardo da Vinci used it regularly. It is a very exacting and unforgiving art-form because the lines cannot be erased.

Libraries all over Pennsylvania have made their collections of unique documents accessible to anyone by scanning and digitizing these items. You can search for a specific topic like “Native Americans” or “Civil War” to find primary source materials to enrich your project. Or, let serendipity be your guide and browse through the collections. Take a look at ads for consumer goods in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Read about medical practices in Colonial Pennsylvania from the notes of two practicing physicians. Enjoy vintage comic books, posters from World War I, college and community newspapers, and historical photographs from all sorts of institutions. More than 700,000 items are available and institutions are always adding more. Find PA Photos and Documents in the list of databases under the “Collections and Services” menu on our website.
