October 16-22, 2016, is the 11th annual celebration of National Friends of Libraries Week, making it a perfect time to publicly thank the Friends of the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library who contribute so much of their time and expertise to significantly enhance our services. Our Friends group began in 1980 and they raise money for the library through membership dues, book sales, a house tour, and an online auction. Funds raised support general operations, programming for children, teens, and adults, special collections, furniture and shelving, continuing education classes for staff, and computer equipment and technology. I know that the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library is a source of pride for our community. Our Friends group is a source of pride, as well. For more information about the Friends, visit the Friends page on our website and join the Friends online, or print a membership application. If you have an interest in serving on the Friends Board of Directors, please contact me for information on board service. Thank you to our outstanding Friends group for your passion and dedication to our library. Sue Erdman Executive Director 717-766-0171

Mad About Mysteries Wednesday, October 12, 7:00 pm This month we're reading Agatha Raisin and the Haunted House by M. C Beaton. Agatha Raisin joins forces with her handsome new neighbor, Paul Chatterton, and they offer their services to the crotchety owner of a haunted house. Whispers, footsteps, and a cold white mist are plaguing Mrs. Witherspoon, but the police have failed to come up with any leads, supernatural or otherwise. The neighbors think it's all a desperate ploy for attention, but Paul and Agatha are sure something more devious is going on. Someone's playing tricks on Mrs. Witherspoon, and when she turns up dead under suspicious circumstances, Agatha finds herself caught up in another baffling murder mystery.

This month we're reading The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. At Baskerville Hall on the grim moors of Devonshire, a legendary curse has apparently claimed one more victim. Sir Charles Baskerville has been found dead. There are no signs of violence, but his face is hideously distorted with terror. Years earlier, a hound-like beast with blazing eyes and dripping jaws was reported to have torn out the throat of Hugo Baskerville. Has the spectral destroyer struck again? More important, is Sir Henry Baskerville, younger heir to the estate, now in danger? Enter Sherlock Holmes, summoned to protect Sir Henry from the fate that has threatened the Baskerville family. As Holmes and Watson begin to investigate, a blood-chilling howl from the fog-shrouded edges of the great Grimpen Mire signals that the legendary hound of the Baskervilles is poised for yet another murderous attack.

Both of these databases have a new interface that makes finding reliable information easy and fun. Kids in Kindergarten through fifth grade will find Explora Primary Schools most useful while middle and high school students will want to use Explora Secondary Schools. Students can search by topic or enter a search term in the search box. Results are relevant to the search terms and include primary source documents, news articles, and Associated Press videos. Perhaps best of all—you won’t be bothered by ads or pop-up windows while you search! Whether your student has a research project to complete for school or is simply curious about something, you’re sure to find interesting and useful information in these databases. Find it in the list of databases under the “Collections and Services” menu on our website.
