Check out our new library services on your next visit! First, we have 150 Playaway Launchpad Learning Tablets for kids with subject specific learning apps on them. The tablets are loaned for one week. They were purchased with grants awarded to Simpson Library from the Whitaker Fund for Math and Science and from the Mechanicsburg Area Foundation. Second, with a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded to the Cumberland County Library System (CCLS), each of our CCLS libraries has a collection of mobile wi-fi hot spots that can be borrowed for 30 days and provides secure Internet access. This grant project is funded through June 30, 2017. Third, thanks to a grant awarded to CCLS by the Whitaker Fund for Math and Science, our libraries have a rotating collection of "Discovery Tables" in our children's libraries that enable children to learn about math and science by playing with educational toys on these subjects. We are excited to offer these new services and invite you to check them out. Volunteers are needed in several areas of the library. Computers – We have been conducting computer classes for the past year and have seen an increase in demand. We need more people who feel comfortable with the basics such as Introduction to Computers, Introduction to Windows 10, and Introduction to Microsoft Word or Excel to help with training a class. Perhaps you don’t want to train but would be available to assist in the session – that is fine too! Computers need to be updated! This is a time-consuming job that resembles babysitting except you are babysitting a computer. Interested? No heavy lifting or bending involved. Bulletin Boards – Have a creative side you would like to share? We regularly change our bulletin boards and need a person who would have fun with this. Any idea with a reading theme is fine and you have freedom to make it impressive! If interested, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Ilse Kryemadhi at 766-0171, ext. 229 or ikryemadhi@ccpa.net. Volunteers are required to provide current criminal and child abuse clearances. Sue Erdman, Executive Director

11:00 am – 2:00 pm For the past couple years, the Federal Government has been reducing the forms they are sending to the library in order for folks to do their own taxes. There has been a big push for everyone to file electronically. What if you do not have a computer or do not feel proficient enough to file electronically? What if those forms are available through the Federal Government, if only you knew the secret to accessing them? A tax professional from HR Block will be at the library to answer questions and give guidance on how to access these forms. The service is free, no registration is required, and assistance is first come, first served.

Are you or a loved one unable to visit the library due to age, illness, or a disability? STAR service provides homebound adults with delivery of books, large print books, audio books, CD's, DVDs, and videos. About once a month, a trained library volunteer will bring library items to your home, apartment, or nursing home room. You will be able to use them for up to 6 weeks. (DVDs are available for 2 weeks.) Your volunteer will then pick up and return the materials to the library for you. Please visit our STAR website for more information on our STAR program, or if you would like to become a STAR volunteer.

Our lobby display this month is by local artist Kim Leathers. Kim creates unique and beautiful dolls from scratch. Her dolls are wooden and she makes all the clothes for them, paints their faces, and embellishes them with ribbons and costume jewelry. Many of the dolls are inspired by her own life events. Because it is the month of love, she will also display some Valentine’s themed dolls she created.
