On May 27, I had the pleasure of attending the Leadership Cumberland graduation where 23 young professionals completed a 9-month leadership training and development program. The Fellows, as participants are called, represent a diverse group of emerging leaders from banking, the law, healthcare, government, production, education, and nonprofits. While differing in age, background, and profession, they share one common trait—the motivation and desire to take on greater responsibilities in the community and at work. In recent years we have hosted one of the Fellows as a participant on our Board of Trustees, learning about library operations and governance. In addition to seeing this year's class graduate, I also had the pleasure of seeing one of our library trustees, Marilyn Zywiec, receive the Distinguished Service Award which is presented to an individual for distinguished contributions to the Cumberland County community witnessed by their service, dedication, and commitment to numerous not for profit organizations. Zywiec joined the library board of trustees in January. You can learn more about her and all of our trustees in the About section of our website under Organization. Congratulations, Marilyn! Story Times at Simpson LibraryLibrary storytime programs encourage children to develop a love of reading by presenting them with stories and activities in a fun, energetic environment. When kids see others excited about reading, it sets a positive example and encourages them to pick up books on their own. **Story Times will resume the week of June 6th.** Rhymetime, Toddlertime, and Storytime are presented several times a week throughout the year. Family Storytime is presented once a week on Mondays at 6:30 pm. Visit our Storytime Events Calendar to view the current schedule.
If you value the importance of early literacy, we hope you will consider sponsoring a Storytime. You can sponsor for a week, a month, or even a year! For more information, and to get pricing information for each sponsorship level, download our Storytime Sponsor Brochure.

Mad About Mysteries Wednesday, June 8, 7:00 pm This month we're reading reading Jar City by Arnaldur Indridason. When a lonely old man is found dead in his Reykjavík flat, the only clues are a cryptic note left by the killer and a photograph of a young girl's grave. Inspector Erlendur discovers that many years ago the victim was accused, but not convicted, of an unsolved crime, a rape. Did the old man's past come back to haunt him? As Erlendur reopens this very cold case, he follows a trail of unusual forensic evidence, uncovering secrets that are much larger than the murder of one old man.

This month we're reading Holes by Louis Sachar. Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnatses. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys’ detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the boys build character by spending all day, every day digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. But there are an awful lot of holes.

Federal, state and local governments have made vast amounts of information available online, but it can be hard to find and then sort through to find what you need. Enter Data USA, a database that provides visualizations of U.S. public data. The site is easy to use and interactive with lots of graphs and charts. Use it to explore employment trends, demographics and economic information by career or locations. Which state has the highest median age? What’s the average salary of a civil engineer? Search for Harrisburg or another city and get a snapshot of its demographics, economy, and health and safety information. Find this information and much more by clicking on Data USA in the list of databases under the “Collections and Services” menu on our website.
