Music by Sean Gaskell Wednesday, March 23, 7:00 pm Sean Gaskell features traditional songs on the 21 stringed West African Kora. The Kora is native to the Mande peoples who live within the countries of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau. The music is traditionally played by oral and musical historians known as Griots (Gree-ohs). The Kora is a melodic and seemingly peaceful instrument, which is somewhat contrary to its musical repertoire. Many songs tell ancient stories of war and hardship, while others praise people of high political status and those who helped expand the Mande Empire. Gaskell has been featured at numerous festivals in the U.S., Gambia, and Senegal. Register at the library or by calling 766-0171.

Mad About Mysteries Wednesday, March 9, 7:00 pm This month we are reading Put a Lid on It by Donald E. Westlake. Meehan, a career thief staring at life without parole, is awaiting sentencing at the Manhattan Correctional Center when he is called to a meeting by someone masquerading as his lawyer. The man, it turns out, represents the presidential re-election campaign committee - now finding itself in need of a little professional help. So they "outsource" Meehan in return for a walk from all pending criminal charges. All he has to do is steal a compromising video tape before the other side springs an "October Surprise" on the president. A shrewd burglar, Meehan bites, and shows just how easy Watergate would have been had they left it to the professionals.

Dennis Baker returns to give us more in-depth instruction on how to become more proficient at photography. Exposure is the amount of light allowed to strike the camera's sensor. If the exposure is too short, not enough light will hit the sensor and the photo will be too dark. Conversely, if too much light strikes the sensor, the photo will be too light. The amount of light that strikes the sensor is controlled by the lens's aperture and the camera's shutter speed. Dennis will clarify the mysteries of f-stops and apertures. Additionally, he will explain the types of situations that fool your camera's meter into creating a picture that is not properly exposed and how to compensate for the under or over-exposure. The technique is called "exposure compensation." Dennis has been a photographer for over 35 years --capturing images digitally for the past 10 years. He enjoys combining the science and art of photography to capture the best possible image, then using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to transform the photograph into a work of art. Dennis is President of the West Shore Photography Club and a photography instructor at the Art Center School and Galleries of Mechanicsburg. Visit his website: www.dennisbakerphoto.com. The program is free, but registration is required! Interested parties can register in person, by calling the library at 766-0171, or emailing the library at simpson@cumberlandcountylibraries.org
