In January, we polled patrons as to what areas they’d like to learn more about and the most often requested class was Excel, with the runner up being Facebook. Classes on these topics in addition to Windows, Microsoft Word, Password and File Management, and iPhone tips have been scheduled. We are working with some very talented retired teachers and business people who have generously volunteered to develop the course curriculum and to teach the classes. Contact Joelene Diana at 766-0171, ext. 248 or jdiana@ccpa.net if you’d like more information about teaching a class. Classes are scheduled on Thursdays from 1:00-3:00 pm. Our first class, Computer Basics, was held on March 24 and was filled to capacity. Look for the full calendar of classes on the events page of our website or stop in and pick up a copy of our class schedule. When viewing our programs on our events page, you can limit your search in the events calendar to Computer Classes to see only those classes. ADVANCE REGISTRATION FOR CLASSES IS REQUIRED as class size is limited. You can register at the library or by calling 766-0171. We appreciate the financial support of the Mechanicsburg Area Foundation and the Friends of the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library as offering computer classes has been one of our Information Literacy goals as part of the PA Forward initiative. Sue Erdman, Library Director

Mad About Mysteries Wednesday, April 13, 7:00 pm This month we're reading Higher Authority by Stephen White. Lester Horner, the first Mormon to sit on the Supreme Court, is implicated when his law clerk, fellow Mormon Blythe Oaks, is charged with sexual harassment by former employee Teresa Crowder. To help her cause, Teresa enlists the aid of her lawyer sister, Lauren, who persuades an old law school pal, Salt Lake City attorney Robin Toner, to handle the case. After Blythe is found murdered and a private investigator hired by Robin turns up dead, Teresa disappears and Lauren turns to Alan Gregory, her fiancé and the hero of White's earlier novels, to help sort matters out.

Simpson Book Club Monday, April 18, 7:00 pm This month we're reading In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume. In 1987, Miri Ammerman returns to her hometown of Elizabeth, New Jersey, to attend a commemoration of the worst year of her life. Thirty-five years earlier, when Miri was fifteen, and in love for the first time, a succession of airplanes fell from the sky, leaving a community reeling. Against this backdrop of actual events that Blume experienced in the early 1950s, when airline travel was new and exciting and everyone dreamed of going somewhere, she paints a vivid portrait of a particular time and place—Nat King Cole singing “Unforgettable,” Elizabeth Taylor haircuts, young (and not-so-young) love, explosive friendships, A-bomb hysteria, rumors of Communist threat, and a young journalist who makes his name reporting tragedy. Through it all, one generation reminds another that life goes on.

Ready to get your driver’s license? Through a partnership with Driving-Tests.org, a driver safety and education company, you can take six different practice tests based specifically on PA’s Department of Motor Vehicles materials. You can quiz yourself on your knowledge of road signs and road situations and brush up on the rules about fines, regulations, and citations. Once you’re ready, you can take a simulated exam, just like the real PennDOT test. Accessibility tools allow you to hear selections read aloud, make them into MP3s, translate pages into other languages, magnify text, and mask sections of the screen for greater visibility on driving practice tests. Go to cumbcounty.driving-tests.org to prepare for your driver’s license test!
