Saturday, August 11 Check-in begins at 7:45 am Join us on Saturday, August 11, 2018, for our 12th annual Joseph T. Simpson Public Library Run for Reading 5K Run and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk! This is a great family event and proceeds benefit children's programs and services at Simpson Public Library. New this year: New location and a Mini Dash (special run for children 5 and under). The registration fee for the 5K Run is $30, and the 1-mile Fun Run/Walk is $10 per family. Mini Dash for children 5 and younger is free. Registration required for all events. 10:00 am The Mah Jongg group now meets four times a month! Mah Jongg is a fascinating rummy-like game you play with tiles rather than cards. All are welcome, whether you know how to play or not, and very little time is required to become familiar with the principles of the game. English Conversation ClubMonday, August 13 and 27, 6:30 pm If English is not your first language and you would like a place to practice, come to the library! Lyme disease, spread through the bite of an infected tick, is the fastest growing infectious disease in the country, and Pennsylvania is at the center of the Lyme disease epidemic. PA Lyme Resource Network (PALRN), working with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, will send a Certified Dare 2B Tick Aware representative to help us learn how to prevent tick bites and Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. Covered topics include preventing tick bites, acting if bitten by a tick, recognizing early symptoms, and when to seek help if you think you are sick. Yoga for Seniors & BeginnersWednesday, August 22, 7:00 pm This class meets monthly on the fourth Wednesday. It is open to all levels of practitioner and is offered in a relaxed and open atmosphere, without judgment. Yoga is a noncompetitive activity, accepting of all ages and skill levels. You will need to bring a yoga mat, beach towel, or other exercise mat, wear comfortable clothing, preferably in layers (room is cool), and be able to sit on the floor. Local author Beverly Bone will be here to share her stories and her newly published book Mechanicsburg -- Images of America. Books will be available for purchase and signing by the author. Beverly’s ancestry roots date back to the 1700s in Cumberland County. She is currently the President of the Board of Directors of the Mechanicsburg Museum. She hopes the book will revive memories of the past and inspire interest in promoting and preserving the history of local communities like Mechanicsburg. Apple for Absolute BeginnersMonday, August 13, 1:00 pm This is an intensive training session for those who are new to Apple iPads or iPhones. Learn the basics of your Apple device on the second Monday of every month at 1:00 pm. Our instructor, Sue Martz, will walk you through instructions step-by-step in a one-on-one fashion. Explore the basics of using a computer. In this class, you will be introduced to the basics of turning on a computer and navigating the desktop using icons, buttons, menus, and windows. You will learn how to access the computer’s built-in help features and how to start and use Windows 10 to access files and applications. The Joseph T. Simpson Public Library has an eyeglass donation container in the library's lobby. The Mechanicsburg Lions Club empties the canister and refurbishes, repairs, and refits glasses for people in need both locally and globally. If you have old eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses that you no longer need, bring them in on your next trip to the library and deposit them in the Lions Club container.

New Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club

They’ve arrived! The Sci-Fi fans you’ve been looking for to discuss books, concepts, the future, sorcery, aliens, and all things in the non-reality realm -- or is it? Come check out this new and exciting book club at Simpson, Watch the Skies. You will find seasoned Sci-Fi fans who have been meeting elsewhere for 17 years and have an extensive list of past reads to recommend. Each month, there will be a new title to read and discuss together on the third Wednesday. Next meeting is August 15, 7:00 - 9:00 pm, and the book is Shinagami Detective by Honor Raconteur. There will also be a visit by eSpec Books. As with all of our book clubs, new members are welcome and no registration is required. Check out their website for more information about the group.

Educator’s Reference Complete School is almost back in session -- know any educators? The library offers access to Educator’s Reference Complete, a free database full of articles designed to help teachers, administrators, and those preparing for jobs in the field of education keep up with professional literature. Pulling from 1,100 journals and 200 reports, topics include assessment, best practices, curriculum development, instructional media, testing, literacy standards, school administration, STEM, and bilingual education. Just type your topic into the search box to find relevant and up-to-date articles covering all age groups from preschoolers all the way through college students. Articles can be downloaded to Google Drive, and citations are automatically generated. Find Educator’s Reference Complete in the list of databases under the "Collection and Services" menu on our Website.
