For great information about Cumberland County's libraries and Friends of the Library groups, take a look at the June 2015 issue of West Shore Connect. The June issue is chock full of information about our library system and is well worth reading. Thank you to West Shore Connect publisher Marsha Blessing for featuring Cumberland County's libraries in this publication. We appreciate you sharing our story with our community or readers. Also included in the publication is an article about Nathaniel Stoner's outdoor seating area created for his Eagle Scout project at Simpson Library. And on a totally different topic...with some recent weeding in our reference collection and the moving of the teen biographies and teen nonfiction books from the main floor to the upper level where the teen fiction books are located, we freed up shelf space on the main floor to give us more room for our adult nonfiction and biography collections. On Jubilee Day, library staff quickly and efficiently moved 16,500 books to their new locations and we now have space for growth at the end of most shelves and have a few empty shelves interspersed throughout for future purchases. Meticulous planning, calculating, counting, measuring, and mapping prior to Jubilee Day made the execution of the move slick, seamless, and smooth. Please take a look at the new signs at the end of the rows to direct you to the correct place and if you can't find what you are looking for, please ask and we'll take you to the new location. Sue Erdman, Library Director

Humid temperatures and a deluge of rain did not stop 300 hearty souls from coming to Friendship Park on June 14 for the Upper Allen Woman’s Club GFWC pig roast to benefit Simpson Library. We quickly found out how many people can fit under the pavilion – LOTS! Strock’s provided delicious pork (and hot dogs and chicken for the non-pork eaters), apple sauce and coleslaw. DJ Bill Runkle provided music until the rains came and Heather Weiss provided beautiful face painting for kids. This fundraiser was very successful and raised $4000 which will be donated to Simpson Library along with an additional $6000 from the club’s treasury, to fund the purchase of display screens and software later this summer. The statewide President’s Project for GFWC Pennsylvania is “Libraries Rock” and the Upper Allen Woman’s Club GFWC is rocking Simpson Library with their financial and volunteer support. Upper Allen Woman's Club GFWC is a community organization that strives to advance the welfare of the community. For more information, please visit the Upper Allen Woman’s Club GFWC Facebook page.

A Friends Sidewalk Booksale, circa 1982 Can you remember what you were doing during the summer of 1980? Were you riding your bike, hanging out at the pool, playing in a baseball league, heading down to the shore, or maybe working your first summer job? It’s been 35 years since it all started, but the Friends of the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library (or Mechanicsburg Area Public Library, as it was then known) have been working continuously since 1980 to support your public library. At that time, membership dues were $2. Over the years, the Friends have brought us quality library programs, purchased equipment, participated in community activities, advocated for library service and support, and provided thousands of dollars for general operations and building expansion. It’s fun to look back at what the Friends have done, but more importantly, we need to look ahead at what still needs to be done. We invite you to join the Friends of the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library, as we help our library meet the challenges of today and prepare for the changes and opportunities of tomorrow. Our success is due to our members and volunteers. Your tax-deductible membership donation to the Friends of the Library will help us do that! If you join now, your membership will be good through December 31, 2015. How do you join? Please visit the Friends Membership page on our website to become a member of the Friends of the Simpson Library!

Since then she has written two memoirs about growing up in rural Missouri during the 1950’s and 1960’s - Unpacking Memories and Up in the Air. Now Deborah feels that she has left a legacy that will live on beyond her. Wednesday, July 8, 7:00 pm This month we're reading Hard Case by Barbara D'Amato. Our protagonist, Cat, takes the reader behind the scenes into one of Chicago's most impressive trauma centers. She doesn't expect murder her first day on the job. Dr. Hannah Grant, director of the trauma center, had graciously welcomed Cat, so it's a particular shock when Dr. Grant is found murdered in the staff lounge. Because the unit is isolated from the rest of the hospital complex, Cat knows one of the staff must be the killer. Cat thinks she has an idea, but then a second murder occurs. When Cat finally discovers the trauma center's darkest secret, she must fight for her own life.

Monday, July 20, 7:00 pm This month we're reading A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land into which they were born. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

Tuesday, July 21, 6:00 pm This month we're reading Red Rising by Pierce Brown. Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies...even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Building Consensus - Round Table Discussion
|
|
The Cumberland County Library System Board and County Commissioners will hold a Round Table Discussion on Wednesday, July 22, 2015 from 7 to 9 pm at Bosler Memorial Library in Carlisle to learn about, discuss and begin to reach consensus regarding recommendations that will be presented that evening about future library service priorities and funding strategies. The recommendations, now being finalized by Cumberland County member library directors, County Chief Clerk Larry Thomas and Library System Executive Director Jonelle Darr, will briefly review what was learned in three fact-finding panel discussions that were held earlier this year on the topics of community needs, future library roles and library finance; and then recommend a plan of action. The Round Table discussion will be facilitated by Monica Gould, President of Strategic Consulting Partners. Discussion participants will include Commissioners Barbara Cross, Jim Hertzler and Gary Eichelberger, County Chief Clerk Larry Thomas, Library System Board members Kevin Stoner, Paul Fisher and Jim Hutcheson, CCLS Executive Director Jonelle Darr, and member library directors Jeff Swope (Bosler Memorial Library) and Bonnie Goble (Fredricksen Library.)
The meeting is free to attend and open to the public.
