Old Canal Days Parade & Friends of the Library Book Sale Don't miss the Old Canal Days parade on Friday, June 16th at 6:00 pm in downtown Lockport. This year you'll want to cheer on the Lockport Branch staff as they perform their very first "book cart drill team" maneuvers. The Friends of the Library will be selling a variety of used books in front of the Lockport Branch and in a tent on 8th Street. Rain Barrels & Other Ways to Save WaterThe Conservation Foundation's Conservation at Home is all about what you can do in your own yard to care for the environment, conserve water, and provide habitat for beneficial wildlife. Chicago Turns 180: From Frontier Outpost to World Class City The year 2017 is Chicago’s 180th birthday as a city. In 1837, the city of 4,000 people was created to be the transfer point for water transport between the Great Lakes and the new Illinois & Michigan Canal then under construction. After the fire in 1871, Chicago rose from its ashes to become the greatest city of the 19th Century, and became a center of industry and commerce in the 20th Century.
