Crest Hill Branch Saturday, August 18 - 7:00 - 10:00 pm White Oak Author Fest presents a casino-themed fundraiser: A Murder Mystery Affair. The Crest Hill Branch will roll out the red carpet and be turned into "The Oaks Casino" where guests will dine on heavy appetizers and drinks. Guests will have the opportunity to interrogate a cast of characters, play casino games to earn clues, and solve old-fashioned pen-to-paper puzzles in order to determine who murdered Bradley, code name Black Jack, a spy undercover at the casino. Tickets are $50 per person, and this fundraiser will help to defray the cost of bringing in New York Times Bestselling author Sara Paretsky during the White Oak Author Fest on Saturday, October 13, 2018. The only way to get a chance to see Ms. Paretsky will be by buying a ticket to this fundraiser. If you're not able to make it to A Murder Mystery Affair the evening of Saturday, August 18, 2018, donations in the amount of $50 are accepted. Purchase tickets at any White Oak Library Branch. We accept cash, credit card, and check, and tickets must be paid for prior to the event. You must be aged 21 years and older to attend, and semi-formal attire is encouraged for the casino theme.

FIRST® LEGO® LEAGUE Informational Meeting Good news – the Library will be hosting an official LEGO® robotics team this fall for 4th through 8th graders! It is being mentored by veteran robotics club teacher John Schulz.
Children who are interested in being a part of this team, which will meet weekly during during September, October, and November, and culminate with a December competition, should bring their parents to this informational meeting. The goal of this team is to challenge kids to think like scientists and engineers. Students will research a real-world engineering challenge, develop a solution, and compete with LEGO® based robots of their own design in a fun team-oriented environment. At the informational meeting, we will provide information regarding the program and meeting times, and answer any questions you or your student might have. Registrations will be taken after the meeting on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited. We expect the cost to be about $50 per student to cover competition fees. Please be prepared to pay on the day of the informational meeting. If you are interested in joining and are unable to attend the meeting, please contact LEGO® robotics mentor John Schulz at porterbots@gmail.com NOTE: This is not a LEGO® building club. Though we use LEGO® products, our focus is on learning how to apply scientific principles to solve problems and apply that learning in a competitive setting - the hardest fun students will ever have. This may not be the right group for students who are primarily interested in building objects with LEGOs®. Thursday, August 16 6:30 - 7:30 pm Lockport Branch REGISTER NOW
