Calling all Grandparents! Before the kids go back to school, bring your grandkids for fun, games, and giveaways! The Crest Hill Branch is going to the dogs! We will use our extensive outdoor yard to feature a variety of rescue organizations, veterinary services, and small business retailers, as well as Library-related activities like read to your dog, a cooling station, paw print craft, and mini agility course to celebrate National Dog Day, which is held on August 26th of each year. That's right - you can bring your dog to the Library on Dog Days of Summer! And, who knows, you just might go home with your new best friend. Pet Supplies Plus from Plainfield has generously donated swag bags to attendees! There will also be raffles where you have the chance to win a variety of dog-related prizes! Good Night Sun: Understanding the Upcoming Solar Eclipse There are several ways to view the solar eclipse on August 21st. Looking directly at the sun can cause eye damage, so you'll want to be safe while enjoying the eclipse. Presented by Art Maurer, this program will show several safe ways to watch the moon cross the face of the sun. Learn how an eclipse occurs and the history of past eclipses. Art Maurer is the Director of the Trackmkan Planetarium at Joliet Junior College and a Solar System Ambassador for NASA. The first 50 arrivals will receive solar eclipse viewing glasses. Great American Solar Eclipse Viewing - Crest Hill Branch On Monday, August 21st the Great American Solar Eclipse, which is a total solar eclipse, will make its way from the coast of Oregon across a swath of the United States, ending in South Carolina. This is the first total eclipse of the Sun visible from the contiguous United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) since February 26, 1979. The last time a total eclipse was visible from coast to coast was on June 8, 1918. In our area, we will see a partial solar eclipse, which is still pretty neat! We have special glasses for you to wear in order to look at the sun as the moon passes in front of it. Stop by to get your glasses and watch the eclipse outside the Library. NO REGISTRATION.
