How Did German Big Business Get Involved in Concentration Camp Business? Featured speaker and storyteller Dr. Ewa Bacon, Professor Emeritus-History, Lewis University will discuss how German big business got involved in Concentration Camp business. This presentation is the second of a three part book talk series by Dr. Bacon on her book Saving Lives in Auschwitz. A book signing will follow our discussion. The German economy collapsed under the dual impact of post-World War I hyperinflation and then was leveled again during the Depression. The government of Adolf Hitler and Nazi ideology (1933) was dedicated to restoring German dominance in science/technology/business and reclaiming lands given to the Poles in post war treaties. The enormous war effort and business recovery led to a terrific labor shortage. By 1944, nine million non-Germans were forced to come work in German industry and farms. However, the real prize were not these forced laborers, but the slave laborers in German concentration camps. The infamous Auschwitz camp was several dozen units each involved in an economic venture (mines, farms, factories). But the biggest was the Auschwitz III unit called Buna-Monowitz where 10,000 slave laborers (living in barracks on starvation rations and under the control of SS guards) joined 20,000 forced laborers (who lived in camps filled with dormitories) and erected an enormous factory complex. One group of prisoners in Buna-Monowitz was physicians and under the leadership of a Polish Roman Catholic physician created a facility to help the slave laborers: a prisoners’ hospital. Men were still dying, but there was some help and some hope. Crest Hill Branch
