The Great Read Kick-Off: Martin Luther King, Jr's Early Life Storyteller Linda Gorham uses folk tales and the art of storytelling to remember the early life of Martin Luther King, Jr. The presentation focuses on MLK as a youth and teenager and how those years influenced him. Ms. Gorham is an engaging speaker for adults and teens, and is highly recommended for children over 7. Refreshments and a Q & A session round out the evening. Ms. Gorham's stories start at 6:30 pm with a 30 minute social time at 6:00 pm that will include an introduction of The Great Read initiative that is being celebrated by libraries and schools throughout the greater Plainfield/Southwest suburban area during the month of February. As part of The Great Read, local author Clarie Hartfield will be discussing her new book A Few Red Drops: The Chicago Race Riot of 1919 . The book tells the story of the Chicago Race Riots of 1919 and how the building tensions and conflicting interests exploded in bloodshed that sent shock waves across the nation. We will learn about the affects the riots had on the Civil Rights Movement and how they are still felt today. Books will be available for purchase and to be signed. Celebrating Black History Month through Film: Selma The film Selma is directed by Ava DuVernay and stars David Oyelowo as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Selma is based in 1965 when African-Americans were still fighting for equal rights. The 54 mile Selma marches that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and prominent civil rights leaders organized targeted voting rights, in particular, among other basic human rights. Martin Luther King Jr. Poster Contest We have a dream that kids will grow up to be kind, respectful and knowledgeable adults. Today we will give the kids an opportunity to show us what they have learned from MLK Jr. and his dreams by creating a poster about MLK Jr. We hope to see how MLK Jr. story has inspired everyone. MLK Jr. Poster Contest Each participant is to create a poster about MLK Jr. with our handouts or completely on your own. Each poster must answer these questions: - Who was MLK Jr. and what did he do?
- How has he made an impact on you?
- What is your dream for the world?
The questions may be answered in words or pictures. On the day of the event, the participants must present their posters, discuss their work, and discuss the three questions listed. There will three age groups 5-7, 8-12 and 13-18. One winner will be picked from each age group. The winners will receive a prize and have their poster displayed in the Library. Rummage Sale - Giving Back to the Community Rummage sales remain treasured rituals in many communities. A rummage sales purpose is to sell miscellaneous secondhand items to help raise money for a charity or special event. White Oak Library District's rummage sale will raise funds to help us give back within our own community. All items will be donated by the community and resold at reasonable prices to the community. All proceeds from the rummage sale will be donated back within the community (designated agencies). Any items not sold will be donated to agencies that help the less-advantaged.
