The Calcasieu Parish Public Library will kick off the
2019 Summer Reading program with a very special
“Kick-Off Celebration” on Friday, May 24 from 4:00 p.m.
until 7:00 p.m. at the Prien Lake Park Harbor’s Edge Pavilion!
There will be entertainment for the whole family as the Magic Yo-Yo, Matthew Noel, performs magical feats and amazing yo-yo tricks that will amaze young and old alike!
Adults, teens, and children will have the opportunity to register for the Summer Reading Program, as well as enjoy a variety of games and crafts including a Home Depot workshop, cookie decorating, photo ops, kites, bookmark making, balloons, and much, much more!
The Friends of the Library, Calcasieu will also be selling 2019 Summer Reading Program t-shirts and book bags.
As a special bonus, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury will be hosting its Movie Under the Stars at sundown featuring everyone’s favorite animated movie, “Wall-E.”

New to the Summer Reading Program?
If you're new to the program or if you just need a refresher course, below are the guidelines to our Summer Reading Program!
Moss Bluff Library will host Ann Weber, Plant and Health Inspector from the United States Department of Agriculture. She will discuss the risks of some of these pesky bugs. See live tarantulas, Madagascar hissing cockroaches and more at this event.
Come join us at the library with your American Doll or other favorite doll or stuffed animal as the Junior League of Lake Charles brings us story time! We will then read a story to our own doll we've brought from home, take a moment to freshen our dolls at the "salon" and enjoy light refreshments.
It's going to be all about science, technology, engineering and math at the Westlake Library on Friday, May 31, as presenters from Phillips 66 come by and hold some kid-friendly (and interactive) STEM demonstrations. The event will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Be prepared to be STEM-amazed.
Dads, Stepdads, Grandpas, Uncles, and Older Brothers: Do you struggle with doing hair? Never fear, Central Library is here! Join us as we teach you how to style hair. Learn the basics from braids to barretts to to updos to simple hair care. All adults are welcome to come learn! Adults can attend only if they come with a child and all children must have an accompanying adult.Registration is recommended, but walk-ins will be welcomed! There will be multiple instructors for all hair types.
Join us as we celebrate this year's Summer Reading Theme "A Universe of Stories". The Houston Museum of Natural Science is offering an out of this world experience titled " We Choose Space". This show is filled with real adventures on the completed International Space Station and on the Moon. Human spaceflight after the Space Shuttle is very exciting, engaging, and real in this 360-degree inflatable dome. Best for all ages! *Due to limited space inside the dome, registration is required. The SWLA Safe Sleep Task Force is presenting a workshop about safe sleep and your baby. They will provide a presentation, information, and will have answers for your questions about how to keep your baby safe while they sleep. Door prizes will be given and refreshments will be provided.
Join Dr. Robert Forrest, retired McNeese State history professor, as he talks about "D-Day" at selected libraries this summer, commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the Allies landing on the beaches of Normandy during WWII. Hear about the planning that went into making it a success, some background on events leading up to this monumental day that changed the course of WWII and history itself, and add to the discussion. *Registration is required.*
Join us as Bill Shearman speaks on his book outlining the rich past of the Mossville community. Mr. Sherman is generously making copies of his book available for free to those in attendance and will be available for signing. For further readings, visit the Mossville History Project.
