The increasing visibility of gay, queer, transgender, and gender non-binary issues has many institutions striving to better serve these communities.

The North Riverside Public Library, a small library outside Chicago, was able to cobble together funding using our budget and grants to create mini makerspaces in small nooks around our library. We will talk about our process, research on materials and space design, and how we solicited valuable feedback from patrons. We’ll also discuss our failures and successes throughout the planning and implementation process, including budgetary constraints and unique workarounds that we discovered. This talk will be applicable to any small or rural library willing to get creative.

The Public Library Services Branch Library Board Basics Workshops are open to all library trustees, library managers and library system staff. They are designed to help participants understand the structure of public library service in Alberta, and how to support the delivery of effective public library service in their communities and regions.
In particular, participants will understand: - Libraries Act and Libraries Regulation and other pertinent legislation.
- The structure of public library service in Alberta.
- Library board roles, responsibilities and relationships.
- Library board trustee roles and responsibilities.
- Other important issues such as finances and board effectiveness.
There is no fee for the workshop. Participants will receive a workbook and other support materials, snacks, and lunch. Other meals, travel, and any required accommodation will be the participant's responsibility. Print copies of the Library Board Basics Workshop workbook are available. From Our Vantage Point - Episode 8: hat's the Deal with Robert's Rules of Order My guest, Eli Mina, a Vancouver based consultant on board effectiveness and a registered Parliamentarian, was definitely up to the task of challenging my thinking, bringing forward the notion that the intention of the rules is actually to promote board engagement and more effective board decision-making. Eli highlights that, when you distill it, Robert’s Rules of Order bring the following key elements to board meetings: order, focus, efficiency, equality, decorum, and a safe meeting environment.

News Literacy Project (NLP) covers topics such as developing keen observation skills that help detect images circulating in a false context; using reverse image searches to find the origins of a digital image; using webpage archivers to explore deleted or changed content; and using Google Street View to explore and confirm details of locations around the world. This webinar will help you boost your own skills and give you confidence to help patrons evaluate their sources, too. The session will also include a brief overview of NLP’s work with public libraries and strategies for adapting its resources for non-school settings.

The largest such convention in the world is attended by more than 25,000 librarians, library supporters, educators, writers, publishers, Friends of Libraries, trustees and special guests. The conference includes more than 2,500 meetings, discussion groups and programs on various topics affecting libraries and librarians.

August 7 - 9, 2019 PNLA is the oldest regional library association in the United States and the only binational association in North America. Members come from Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and beyond. Since 1909, PNLA has provided a professional and social forum for librarians, library workers, and library supporters throughout the vast Pacific Northwest region. The PNLA conference is August 7-9, 2019 and will be held in Spokane, Washington at the Centennial Hotel.

September 26 - 27, 2019 Every year, over 150 delegates from school and public libraries in northern Alberta, northern British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories attend Peace Library System's Rural Libraries Conference. This year's conference is themed The Power of People. On September 26 & 27, delegates will have the chance to network, visit the exhibitor tradeshow, and attend a variety of sessions on topics ranging from programming to board relations to collection development.
