Traditional definitions of employee recognition are evolving to keep pace with both neuroscience insights and the evolving workplace. We’re shifting to focus on the big picture of the employee experience, which is fueled by a need to find meaning and purpose in our working lives. We therefore need to continue to move beyond tangible rewards and enhance opportunities to create deeper connections between employees through positive feedback, gratitude and peer relationships.
Emerging research in neuroscience reinforces this need to direct attention to the ‘social’ aspects of our workplace and what that means to shaping an environment that allows employees to make a meaningful contribution.

|
You have what you think is a straightforward conversation with an employee. Then you find out later they didn’t get it. They’re off on a tangent, completely lost, or spinning in circles. In this interactive and informative program, learn three tactics to massively improve your manager/employee interactions so you can trust your employees to do what you ask the first time.

July 11, 2018 | 12:30pm - 2:00pm (MT) $60 US Library signage represents the first lines of communication between a library user and the library. Are you doing everything to ensure that your signage is user-friendly and inviting? Although we have the best intentions, sometimes our signage can be punitive, contradictory, outdated, or passive aggressive. In this workshop, Mark Aaron Polger provides you with the top ten tips to follow when preparing new signage for your library. Polger, a library professional at the College of Staten Island, CUNY, conducted a library signage audit in 2012 and continued this project. He has conducted both quantitative and qualitative assessment of signage design, placement, branding, message, and in 2017, he conducted interviews on students’ perceptions of library signage. He discusses what constitutes “bad” and “good” signage and the importance of developing a signage policy to ensure consistency in design and overall language. Other topics that will be addressed will be placement, ADA compliancy, branding, design, verbiage, and the use of images, language, and font. You’ll come out of this workshop with the best practices to assess your current signage and develop improved signage for your institution.

Seventy-four percent of girls in middle school are interested in STEM but only 18% of computer science graduates are female. This data is a great indication that gender gap in technical fields is not about girls’ lack of interest in STEM subjects—it’s about losing that interest due to lack of opportunities to engage in meaningful STEM activities. Early STEM experiences matter and designing these experiences so that they’d be accessible to every student, girls and boys, should be a high priority for every educational institute.
In this edWebinar, Dr. Azi Jamalian, Head of Education Strategy at littleBits, discusses the need for creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills, and how we can engage girls and boys in STEM through invention-based learning.

Everyone seems to be arguing. One glance at Facebook demonstrates how comments quickly turn toxic. So how can libraries make a difference? Can we create a space where people will both talk and listen? In 2016, the Poudre River Public Library District partnered with the Fort Collins Human Resources Commission to present four community forums on issues about diversity in our community. These conversations were complicated, controversial, and far from perfect, but they need to happen in more libraries throughout Colorado. Listen to our story and bring your own thoughts to share in the chat about how libraries can cultivate positive conversations within their community.
