It’s not always easy to lead an entire organization by yourself. Solo librarians are in the unique position where we are expected to be leaders but we very rarely, if ever, have a staff to lead. This presentation is geared toward the solo librarian or librarians who oversee a very small staff. Through storytelling and anecdotes, I hope to encourage and inspire librarians to take charge of their unique leadership roles within their organizations and discover opportunities to collaborate, learn, and influence others outside of their organization.

May 24, 2018 | 1:00pm - 2:30pm $79 US Okay, let’s be honest. Everybody knows that to motivate donors to give (to motivate anyone to do anything, really) you have to tell stories. Facts and statistics don’t work. Brilliant arguments don’t work. Super-clear explanations don’t work. If you want people to pay attention to what you’re saying -- and then take the action you want them to take -- you gotta tell a story!
But there’s something hardly anyone knows yet: To really make fundraising work, you have to tell the right story. The story that speaks to the donor’s heart and mind and helps them connect their values -- and their money -- to your cause. The real story for fundraising. This practical, hands-on session will show you how to discover your fundraising stories. And how to tell them with grace, drama, and effectiveness!

May 30, 2018 | 12:30pm - 2:00pm (MT) $65 US Social media is crucial to libraries in terms of both staff and patron usage. Facebook, Twitter, and other networks can be used for marketing, public outreach, and even for providing library services. Access to the internet and social media draws patrons into the library. But do you and your staff have policies that govern social media usage? Is your staff using social media strategically or haphazardly? Are your patrons using it in a safe and ethical way while they are in your building?
In this new workshop, library technology and instruction expert Laura Solomon shows you how to craft a social media policy that will help ensure that you and your staff are getting the most out of these resources and that you are protecting your community and patrons in the process. You'll learn how writing this kind of policy can be completely different than writing any other text for the library and what you might need in a policy for staff versus what you might need to spell out for patrons.

The idea for ways that blockchain technology could be used by libraries came after hearing a presentation on LEARNING IS EARNING in the national learning economy made by Jane McGonigal, Institute for the Future, at the at the SXSW conference. The discussion fueled a plan for libraries to validate the academic and professional development credentials of individuals in a permanent electronic ledger that could have global access to their records eliminating the need for individuals to keep track of and submit individual copies of transcripts, certificates, badges, and other credentials. An investigation revealed that libraries might be able to use blockchain technology to accomplish more than housing electronic credentials. Twenty-first century information professionals provide dynamic services and resources in physical and virtual spaces through personal interaction, virtual intermediation, or social media. In addition to lending books, information centers provide entry points to the digital world. When walking into a library or information center, you may find robots, makerspaces with 3D printers, collaborative areas, augmented reality apps, and access to an array of digital materials. Librarians/information professionals have the research and technical skills needed to organize and analyze information in order to customize relevant sources for each user. Libraries are dynamic, ever-changing organizations that can anchor communities. Technology enables the profession to broaden our impact within the community and around the globe.
