On Tuesday, April 6, 2021, the Town Council of the Town of Los Gatos appointed Jen Siraganian as the Town Poet Laureate for a term of April 2021 through December 2023! The Town Poet Laureate is an honorary position established in 2010 to further the appreciation and advancement of poetry and literary arts in Los Gatos. Jen Siraganian is the fifth individual to be named Town Poet Laureate. Jen Siraganian is a writer, educator, and literary organizer. She has served as Managing Director for Litquake: San Francisco's Literary Festival, been nominated for a Ruth Lilly Fellowship and a Pushcart Prize, earned scholarships from Community of Writers at Squaw Valley and Napa Valley Writers' Conference, and authored a poetry chapbook titled Fractured. "My vision as the Town Poet Laureate is to bring poetry into the public sphere. Poetry is a living, breathing thing, and it resides in all of us, no matter our race, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, economic status, or ethnic background. Whether I'm inviting Bay Area poets to share their words with our community or leading poetry writing workshops, I hope to serve as constant reminder that poetry and literature thrive in Los Gatos." Asked about her favorite poets, the Poet Laureate offered a list including Elizabeth Bishop, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Jericho Brown, Chen Chen, and Tongo Eisin-Martin. Also mentioned were Beth Ann Fennelly, Maggie Nelson, Naomi Shibab Nye, Mary Szybist, and Natasha Threthewey. The Poet Laureate will hold a virtual poetry reading on Tuesday, May 25th at 5:00pm featuring several local poets. More details will be released soon, however you can register now for this event by clicking here.
