To the avid readers of the Tuesday Evening Book Club,
Just yesterday our book club discussed Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain.We decided that the book was an interesting read, packed with information. Some of us were introverts, some were extroverts, but most of us identified more as ambiverts, so the discussion made for an interesting one. We liked that Cain offered more sides to the equation when she mentioned the different areas of personality that make up a person. Of course, introversion vs. Extroversion is only one part of an individual. The book had a heavy focus on success in the world of business and negotiations, which surprised a few of us as well.
On July 17th, at 6:30 pm, we will be discussing White Chrysanthemum by Mary Lynn Bracht, a historical fiction novel about two Korean sisters separated by World War II: "As Hana and Emi journey far from home, author Mary Lynn Bracht gives elegant voice to the toll of wartime on women, the strength of family, and the power of time to heal. Suspenseful, hopeful, and ultimately redemptive, White Chrysanthemum tells a story of two sisters whose love for each other is strong enough to triumph over the evils of war."
Pick up a copy of the book and join us in July! At our next meeting we will be voting on our next round of books for the fall!
Having spent her entire youth under Japanese occupation, a young woman in World War II-era Korea follows in her mother's footsteps as an elite female diver only to be forced into prostitution in order to save her beloved younger sister, who decades later resolves to find healing and closure from the ghosts of the past.
Traces the author's experiences as a child born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, describing her participation in her family's paranoid stockpiling activities and her resolve to educate herself well enough to earn an acceptance into a prestigious university and the unfamiliar world beyond.
