Pop-Up Rainbow Craft in the Makerspace. Make two rainbows one for yourself another one to keep at the library. We ask you to place the library rainbow in one of the adult bookshelves. Materials will be provided.

Do you want to be a writer? Are you itching to finally sit down and write that book? Join the Writer's Workshop and get your story told! The Writer's Workshop is a safe, encouraging space to work on a story or poem of any genre. We meet on the first Monday of each month.

A B Cs and Ds of Medicare 04/02/24 @ 6:30pm in the Small Conference Room David Banet, a licensed insurance counselor, will present an educational seminar to give people turning 65 and older a safe place to ask questions and get information without being pressured by insurance companies. The seminar is focused on Medicare Parts A, B, C, & D and how Medicare Supplemental plans work. This allows people to get general answers concerning the moving parts of Medicare, thus turning a complicated process into a simple one for people faced with these important life decisions. We encourage you to register for this program, but it is not required.

Michigan has a goal to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030. To do our part, Royal Oak Sustainability has launch several programs and initiative to help residents, and businesses learn how to reduce food waste through better purchasing habits, composting, and food donation programs.
Join Royal Oak Sustainability as we welcome Sara Covatta of Suburban Rat Haters Guide to Composting as she covers the basics of at-home composting, and takes a deeper dive into the Bokashi method of composting. You'll leave with the information and resources you need to start composting.

Celebrate Poetry with Roberta Brown and Diane DeCillis04/04/24 @ 6:30pm in the Friends AuditoriumCelebrate Poetry featuring Royal Oak Artist Laureate Roberta Brown reading poems about Royal Oak and Michigan Notable Author/Poet Diane DeCillis reading from her collection in process "Absolute Threshold." This event, which kicks off National Poetry Month at the Royal Oak Public Library, will also include a short session with the two authors interviewing one another, as well as a look at the creative process and demonstration of writing a poem.

Join the Arab American National Museum for an informational presentation, and then make your own mosaic! This general presentation touches on what makes a country Arab, the differences between the Arab World and the Middle East, ethnic and religious diversity within the Arab World, the history of Arab immigration to the United States, Arab American demographics, and Arab American culture. Participants will then have the opportunity to make their very own mosaic craft tile to take home. Mosaics are a rich form of art that has existed in many of the Arab countries for centuries.
Registration is required for craft numbers.

Like art journaling, there is no “one size fits all” definition for what a junk journal really is.
Junk journals can vary from person to person, but it generally most of them do share one primary characteristic: The journal is made with mostly a mix of found and recycled materials. Come to the Makerspace and create a Junk Journal. Materials will be provided.

Writing Your Life: A Personal Essay Workshop04/11/24 @ 6:00pm in the Friends AuditoriumWhat makes a compelling personal essay? How do you turn your experiences into marketable stories? This introductory workshop covers the basic tools you need to craft personal experience pieces for publication or your own pleasure. Workshop leader Cindy La Ferle has published personal essays in Reader's Digest, Newsweek, Victoria, Country Gardens, The Christian Science Monitor, and many other national publications. Bring your laptop or notebook to the class.

Birds are a fascinating group of animals. They are free to move, colorful and always acting in strange and different ways. Watching can be fun but are you a birdwatcher? The presentation will discuss what birdwatching and birding means. It will introduce the many ways to enjoy birds. Come and enjoy this wonderful world.
Don Burlett was a Research Scientist working in the rubber industry for almost 40 years, having retired in 2016. He is currently President of Oakland Audubon Society (has been for the last 17 years) and was a board member at Seven Ponds Nature Center (6 years).

Royal Oak Garden Club : How to Create a Butterfly Garden 04/22/24 @ 6:30pm in the Friends Auditorium How to build a butterfly garden by John Blair who turned a hobby into a passion for building butterfly habitats and restoring land using native plants, also enjoys sharing his knowledge as a speaker and inviting visitors to see his work on his nine acre property in Brooklyn, Michigan.

Want to make a wonderful rag quilt? In the coming weeks and months (three sessions, three consecutive months) you will have a complete quilt. You should plan to attend all three sessions, 3/26/24 - 4/30/24 - 5/14/24.
Martha has taught students how to make this quilt many times and not a single person, beginner or advanced, has ever been disappointed with the results! She has taught quilting for more than 30 years starting in her home and in colleges and in her own shop.

Join this club designed to build English language skills for non-native speakers. Emphasis will be on reading and writing. Participants will explore, poetry, essays and other forms of text. Librarian Susan Sheiner along with guest teachers will lead sessions.
All skill levels welcome. Roberta Brown, Royal Oak Artist Laurate, will lead a series of poetry workshops through the spring. All skill levels welcome.

The club, in partnership with Oakland Community College, is designed to give non-native speakers a chance to practice their English skills. English speakers who want to learn about other cultures are invited as well. Participants view a movie prior to the meeting, to discuss with the group. All skill levels welcome.
