Graphic Novels have gained popularity quickly in the last several years, and many have been named as award winners, including one that won a Pulitzer Prize. What exactly is a graphic novel? Many people use the terms graphic novel and comic book interchangeably; however, there are differences! Graphic novels, like comic books, utilize heavy illustrations to depict the story, and the artwork is reminiscent of what many people remember from comic books. While comics are usually published in pieces, with comic books telling a piece of a story that can span over many issues. Graphic novels are typically encapsulated with the story reading like a full novel, and are often more complex and detailed because it's contained in one book. Is there quality reading to be had from a graphic novel? Absolutely! Maus I: A Survivor's Tale: My Father Bleeds History by Art Spiegelman has won numerous awards, including a Pulitzer Prize. Are graphic novels just for kids and teens? Absolutely not! Many classic novels have been formatted into graphic novels, such as The Odyssey by Homer and The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde. Graphic novels have also been used as a format for biographies and memoirs. There are also many non-fiction books in graphic format!
