The SWGRL Spotlight A monthly e-news and information publication of the Southwest Georgia Regional Library System. August 2016 Volume 8, Issue 1
As children are getting excited to start a new school year, parents and caregivers are busy buying school supplies. While you are on the hunt for the perfect backpack and stocking up on pencils, don't forget one of the most important school supplies: A library card! A library card opens up so many resources for your child, whether they're just starting out in Kindergarten or entering their last year of high school. The best part is that if they have never had a library card before, this school supply is completely free! Visit your library for information on how to sign them up for their own library card.

Advocate Spotlight: Luis Narimatsu The Southwest Georgia Library for Accessible Services (SWGLAS) would like to shine the spotlight on an important community advocate: Luis Narimatsu, Co-Director for the Georgia Industries for the Blind (GIB). GIB is part of the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency, and provides career opportunities for blind individuals. Luis has played an important role in helping to inform our local community of the benefits and resources available through the Southwest Georgia Library for Accessible Services. Luis lost his sight to Glaucoma 25 years ago, and recounts those as very challenging, dark times. He credits having amazing people in his life to helping pull him out of his depression, and he began to move forward in his life. His first major step was to attend a center for blind adults, which is where he learned to read Braille, orientation and mobility, and independent living skills. Another important aspect that Luis pursued was the use of technology. He had a background in computer programming from college, and his brother thought he should buy a computer. This provoked an important question: How was Luis going to use it?
Through a series of fortunate events, his sister approached a blind man using a computer in a library and inquired about helping her brother to use a computer again. This man connected Luis with Ted Henter, who had invented a screen reader called JAWS®. Ted provided the software, hardware, and training material and told Luis “You don’t have to pay me for these items; these are just nuts and bolts that if you learn how to use properly, will open doors wherever you go.” It took Luis less than a year to become proficient on a computer again, and he knew one day would make sure to pay forward the kindness that had been shown him. In the 14 years he has been employed with GIB, Luis has been a driving force behind their technology training in all of the GIB plants, and has taught over 120 blind and sighted employees computer and assistive technology skills. The Southwest Georgia Library for Accessible Services is able to provide access to many assistive devices that help foster independence and further the education for individuals who are blind. We could not continue to serve our community the way we do without strong advocates like Luis who recognize and vocalize the value of SWGLAS.
