Small Wonder! Learning to Read Begins at Birth
The Southwest Georgia Regional Library System has an exciting new program series designed to help get Every Child Ready to Read®. Research shows that children who develop essential language and other early literacy skills before they start kindergarten become better readers. Children who do not know these skills when they begin school have a more difficult time learning to read. Parents and other caregivers can learn how to develop these important skills through the library’s Every Child Ready to Read® program, which: - Demonstrate how to help children learn early literacy skills.
- Engage adults and children in fun activities that use simple but powerful learning experiences.
- Send parents and caregivers home with early literacy activities to incorporate into everyday routines.
In addition to the programs, the library is challenging caregivers and children to reach 1,000 books before Kindergarten. Starting September 1, 2015, caregivers can stop by their local branch and pick up a reading log to start keeping track. Stay tuned for information on upcoming programs at your library.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month! While today's libraries still serve as a great book hub, there are so many other resources available to library card holders. The library provides access to online databases that help students reach academic success, as well as basic computer classes for the beginning computer user. There are children's programs, access to geneological materials, and e-book downloads. There is no charge to sign up for a library card for the first time. For card replacement, there is a $2 replacement fee. Ask your friends and family if they have checked out their local public library recently, and encourage them to sign up for their own library card.
