Pro Fishing Guide Ken Sturdivant Leads Free Workshops

Before heading out on a summer fishing trip, outdoor enthusiasts should head to the library for a free workshop on fishing in Lake Lanier with professional fishing guide Ken Sturdivant, who founded Southern Fishing Schools in 1985 and is well known as a local radio and television personality. In the first workshop on Saturday, June 2 at 2:00 p.m. at the Post Road Library, Sturdivant and special guest angler Stephen Knight from Striper Steve’s Fishing Charters will discuss the habits of striper and the most effective equipment and techniques for catching them.

Vote for The Great American Read
|

The Great American Read, an eight-part television series hosted by Meredith Viera premiered on PBS in May, offering details about America's 100 best-loved novels. If you missed it, you can stream the two-hour special online. Vote for Your Favorite Book Over the summer, viewers can vote online at PBS.org and through hashtag voting via Facebook and Twitter. Leading up to the finale in October, viewers will also be able to cast their votes by using SMS and toll-free voting. Instructions for voting are provided on PBS.org. Let's Read! PBS has a handy checklist for keeping track of which books you've read. We're also adding direct links to all 100 books in the library catalog (look under Reader's Corner - Adults later this month), where you can place a hold on the ones you'd like to read next using your library card. Follow Along with FCPL Favorites Library staff and volunteers have been sharing their favorite books from The Great American Reads list on Instagram. Wednesday, June 20 at 7:00 p.m. Cumming Library Parents of elementary and middle grades students are invited to read and discuss several challenged books in this summer series. All discussions will be facilitated by Danielle Hartsfield, a faculty member in the Teacher Education Department at the University of North Georgia.

Register for Summer Reading Fun and Win Prizes

Log Your Reading & Activities Earn points and badges by reading and completing activities (such as attending library programs and visiting a Forsyth County park). Kids and teens can visit the library to claim a prize reward when they reach 100, 250, and 500 points, including $5 action passes from Stars and Strikes and coupons for free treats from Wendy’s, Chick-fil-A, Zaxby’s, and Dunkin Donuts. Win a Grand Prize Raffle When registered readers reach 500 points, they receive an entry into our Grand Prize drawings for preschoolers, elementary-aged children, teens, and adults. Grand Prizes include mountain and cruising bikes donated by Zaxby’s, a horseback riding adventure for four donated by Gold City Corral, eReaders donated by FCPL Friends & Advocates and Modern Woodmen, and gift certificates for restaurants and entertainment.
