|
|
Build a Better World at the Library Summer Reading Fun for kids, teens, and adults has begun! We started summer with a bang at our annual Summer Reading Kick-Off Carnivals, featuring Cameron's One Man Circus and Barely Balanced! About 2,400 patrons attended the carnival events, and several lucky raffle winners won LEGO® gift cards to help them start building a better world! Thanks to the FCPL Friends & Advocates for sponsoring these raffle prizes at the carnivals. Be sure to register online or at one of our library branches and then set your reading goal and track your progress. Registration is open through July 31. Children and teens who meet their reading goals have until August 5 to receive their prizes, including a free book donated by the FCPL Friends & Advocates. In addition, all Summer Reading Fun participants who reach their reading goals will be entered in grand prize raffle drawings:
- Stars and Strikes Family Fun Pack Basket for readers up to grade 5
- AMC Movie Gift Card Basket for readers in grades 6 - 12
- Apple iPad mini for adult readers
Raffle prizes are donated by the FCPL Friends & Advocates and Stars and Strikes Family Entertainment Center. Many thanks to our sponsors!

My First Library Card Art Contest
|
|
Local children have an opportunity to build a better library card this summer, thanks to the My First Library Card Art Contest sponsored by Forsyth County Public Library and Canton-Woodstock-Cumming Macaroni Kid. The contest runs through June 30 and is open to children in two age groups: Pre-K through 5th grade and 6th through 12th grade. Entry forms are available online and at all library branches. “This year’s summer reading theme is ‘Build a Better World’ and so many of the children’s activities we’ve planned focus on using creativity to solve problems, build models, and create works of art. Inviting young patrons to create My First Library Card designs is such a natural extension of that theme,” explains FCPL Program Manager Laura Bradley. Prizes will be awarded for the winning design in each age group. Pride will also be part of the prize, as the winners see their creations printed on My First Library Cards when the designs are unveiled in August.

Reading Without Walls is an annual nationwide reading program encouraging students to read books that they wouldn’t normally choose on their own, including different themes, diverse authors and content, formats, settings, characters, and subjects. This program was created by author and cartoonist Gene Yang, who serves as the National Ambassador for Young Literature. The National Ambassador Program is sponsored by The Children's Book Council, Every Child a Reader, and The Library of Congress. Participating this summer is simple: - Read a book about a character who doesn’t look like you or live like you.
- Read a book about a topic you don’t know much about.
- Read a book in a format that you don’t normally read for fun (a chapter book, a graphic novel, a book in verse, or an audiobook).
Reading Without Walls promotes diversity, opens readers’ minds to new ideas and experiences, and fosters appreciation and understanding for others while learning new and exciting things. Share how you’re Reading Without Walls on Facebook or Instagram with the hashtags #fcplstories and #readingwithoutwalls.

Looking to support the library? Want some great deals on great books? The FCPL Friends & Advocates operate used bookstores inside the Cumming Library, the Post Road Library, and the Sharon Forks Library. The Bookstores are open during regular library hours. Funds raised from book sales are used to support additional programs, materials, and events beyond the library's regular budget. We appreciate the hard work of the FCPL Friends & Advocates, and their generous sponsorship of Summer Reading Fun!
