These special Santa visits are designed specifically for children with sensory or other special needs and their families.
“We understand how challenging it can be for a child with sensory or other special needs to wait in line, be overwhelmed with noises, sounds, and smells, and then rushed to sit on the lap of a person they don’t know very well,” says Stephanie Hampson, Youth Services Supervisor at the Hampton Park Library. “Many of those families have given up on the possibility that their children might have a positive experience meeting with Santa. The library offers those families an alternative to long lines, bright lights, and noisy malls.”
What to Expect at Sensitive Santa
What makes this program “special?”
This program is unique in that it specifically targets children with sensory sensitivities and accommodates children who may need more time with their Santa visit.
What to expect:
Dimmed lights
Lowered voices
No lines! Children are welcome to bring snacks and we will provide an area for crafts and drawing until it’s time to see Santa.
One-on-one time with Santa. No rushing, no interruptions.
Children sign up for 10-minute sessions. You will need to contact each individual library to schedule your session. Due to the space/time constraints, we ask that families only take one 10-minute session.
Santa and his elves will be sensitive about touch and sound with your child, but let us know if you have or need any special considerations.
A gentle reminder:
This program is for children with sensory sensitivities (such as autism) or special needs and their families. Spacing is extremely limited. If your child does not meet the requirements for this program, please join us instead for another holiday program this month. Thank you in advance for your consideration!
Sensitive Santa Schedule
Children will sign up for 10-minute Santa sessions. This gives the child time to get familiar with Santa and warm up to the idea of sitting on his lap or talking to him, rather than being rushed through the visit.
Please let us know if your child will need a longer time or special consideration.
