The Salmo Valley Public Library (SVPL) 2023 AGM was held on March 11th. Thank you to departing board members Judi Cozzetto and Janet Pierce. The remaining members, Pat Goulden, Tom Nixon, Jennifer Gawne, Sylvia Korens, Melanie Briscoe, and Teresa Kjelson, along with RDCK representative Hans Cunningham and Village representative Kenzie Neil, welcome our newest board members Cathy Nyemeck and Pamala Chalmers! The Salmo Library Board is integral to the smooth sailing of your library. This is the crew that, among other things, develops and approves strategic goals, adopts the budget, advocates for the library, and monitors results to measure successes.

If you want to review some of the library's successes from last year, pick up our 2023 Annual Report. Some highlights that might be of interest are that the library currently has 18,115 physical items in the collection and that these, along with the digital collection, circulated 26,200 throughout the year, up from 25,530 in 2022! In 2023, the Salmo Library staff, volunteers and Friends of the Library did much work to bring you more free programming. We provided 281 free programs to the community, with 2,075 people participating throughout the year! Fundraising, donations, and grants often support the many library programs we can bring to the community. Thanks to the Regional District, the Village of Salmo, and the Province of BC, we can provide essential library services to Salmo and Area G.

Salmo's DOT Night is back! Join us for this special event where YOU have the power to shape funding priorities for local organizations. Each year the Village of Salmo and RDCK Area G select funding (grant) priorities for the CBT’s Community Initiatives and Affected Areas Program (CIP/AAP) for local organizations via a process called “DOT Night”, whereby all residents to come to a special “DOT Night meeting” meeting night and place their 5 allotted “DOTS” next to the organization they would like to see receive a grant for the year. Come out and show your support by casting your votes for grant funding. Your voice matters!

Checking Your Poetic Priveledge
Speaking out either in written format, on a podcast, or at a rally are important ways that we can use our voices to make change happen in the world around us, but how can we ensure that we are advocating for our rights in ways that are not harmful to others? In this 2 hour workshop we will discuss how each of us can check our poetic privilege when we are writing poetry, songs, stories, articles, or speeches. Join us at the library on Wednesday April 17th from 5-7pm. Please contact the library to pre-register.

So much of what happens in Salmo is dependent upon volunteers. How many people really know what volunteer work is done behind the scenes? How many people who may be willing to help know where they might be needed? Well, here’s an amazing opportunity to get the word out. Check out a Volunteer Day at the Library on Saturday, April 20th, from 2 to 4 p.m.
|
Salmo Public Library wants to help promote all the excellent services and appreciate the volunteers who work behind the scenes. Our library’s window display will be filled with information and pictures of local organizations made possible by volunteers during April. If you would like your organization highlighted, send a short bio along with a couple of photos of the work/services your group does to salmolibrary@salmo.bc.libraries.coop
|
|
Then, on Saturday, April 20th, at 2:00 p.m., the library will give the public an opportunity to meet and learn more about these wonderful service groups. If your organization depends on volunteers and/or has volunteer opportunities available, you are invited to set up a small display and be available to answer questions from those interested in knowing more about what you do. For more information about these opportunities, contact the library.
