Started and sponsored by the Friends of the American Fork Library, the annual Scary Story Contest has been accepting entrants' spine-tingling stories for nearly two decades! What started out with a handful of entries has grown to well over a hundred stories each year!
This year's contest will have some minor modifications due to COVID-19. Entries will be submitted online here from October 1-15. There you will fill out an entry form, upload your story, and follow the link for payment via PayPal. The $3 entry fee must be paid for each Youth & Adult entry, however, Children (PreK-6th grade) do NOT pay an entry fee. All details for this year's contest can be found here.
Contest winners will be announced at our virtual Awards Night, Thursday, October 29th at 6:30 pm on the Library's Facebook page. A few of the entries will also be read at this Facebook Live event. The First Place Adult author will receive a $50 cash prize. Additional cash prizes will be awarded in the Adult and Youth categories, contingent on the number of outstanding entries received. Children authors can pick up a prize, book, and judge's comments in the Children's Library from October 26th-November 7th.
Read for Change:
Social Justice Book Club for Kids
Children ages 6-12 can explore social justice topics that impact their daily lives through children’s literature. Each month one of our librarians will read aloud children’s books on that month’s social justice topic (e.g. celebrating diversity, gender, equity, disability). After the book readings, we will discuss the month’s social justice topic as a group. This will be followed by an activity related to the reading.
This is a hybrid event. We will have limited in-person as well as virtual options. Registration is required.
This month we will be reading and discussing Dreamers by Yuyi Morales on October 8th at 3:00 pm.
