May is looking to be a busy month at the Kingston Public Library! With the warm weather approaching, we are starting to make use of the outdoor spaces at the Library and around town. In person children's programs are starting up again outside at the tent on the Summer Street lawn, and the Library will be hosting the Kingston Garden Club's Annual Plant Sale on May 15th at 10am under the tent. For those of you looking to get outside and enjoy the weather, the Library has partnered with the Kingston Recreation Department and South Shore Family Network to set up a storywalk at Grays Beach playground for the month of May. Here at the Library, our beautiful courtyard has always been one of the most unique features of the building. Now, with donations of new outdoor furniture from the Library Trustees, along with some hard work from volunteers, the courtyard has never looked better! Be sure to stop by and enjoy some quiet time in the shade. You might even meet one of our recently hatched butterflies! We have several interesting programs coming up this month for history lovers, including an author talk on May 13th with Boson City Archaeologist Joseph Bagley who will be speaking about his book Boston's Oldest Buildings and Where to Find Them. Also, for those with an interest in local history, the Library will be hosting a drive-in movie event on May 12th at 8:30. We'll be showing a documentary from Hit and Run History called Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare's Shipwreck which chronicles Stephen Hopkins, the only passenger who had previously been to North America before traveling on the Mayflower. For kids, Miss Sam has a full suite of programs throughout the month of May including Jedi Knight training, outdoor playgroups, drawing programs, and more! You can see the full listing of events on our online calendar. Mike Slawson, Library Director

Drive-in Movie - Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare’s Shipwreck
May 12th at 8pm in the Library Parking Lot While the year 2020 brought the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the Mayflower, the new year will bring a fascinating tale of a Mayflower passenger and his influence on William Shakespeare. Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare’s Shipwreck premiered on January 15 on WSBE Rhode Island PBS, and will show again on May 12th at 8pm at the Kingston Public Library. In this 90-minute film, producer Andrew Giles Buckley, creator and host of Hit and Run History, and his crew follow the story of Stephen Hopkins, the only passenger who had previously been to North America before traveling on the Mayflower. A decade earlier, in 1609, Hopkins had been aboard a Jamestown-bound ship called the Sea Venture, which wrecked on Bermuda. Space is limited and registration is required.

Joseph Bagley - Boston's Oldest Buildings and Where to Find Them May 13th at 7pm As Boston approaches its 400th anniversary, it is remarkable that it still maintains its historic character despite constant development. In Boston’s Oldest Buildings and Where to Find Them, City Archaeologist Joseph Bagley features fifty buildings that all pre-date 1800 and illustrate the city’s early history. This is the first book to survey Boston’s fifty oldest buildings and does so through an approachable narrative which will appeal to history lovers, architectural enthusiasts, and tourists alike.
