1000 Things Before Kindergarten
Get your favorite little one ready to learn!

Studies show that the more books a child has read to them, the better they are able to learn. 80% of brain development happens in the first three years of life. Reading assists in brain development and can create fun memories between you and your child. The idea of 1,000 Things is to add the five basics of early childhood parenting by tracking each book and activity completed with your child.
How to get started:
  1. Register: Sign up at the library and receive a welcome packet OR sign up online and download the materials at home!
  2. Track Your Reading and Activities: For each book read or activity completed, simply color in one of the bubbles on your log.
  3. 100 Book Milestones: Each time you complete 100 Things, return your log to the library. Logs can be returned at the library or emailed to mrlsweb@gmail.com. For each 100 Things completed, you will receive a free book! Your free book can be picked up at the library or you can schedule a contactless pickup using our lockers.
  4. 1,000 Things: You did it! Come celebrate at the library and receive a certificate for your achievement.
Remember, repetition is important! You can read the same book or do the same activity
over and over again with your child. If you need suggestions for books to read, ask us!

This program is free and open to children from birth until the child enters Kindergarten.

This program is funded by The Institute of Museum and Library services and the Library of Virginia.
