The Great Shakeout Thursday October 20, 10:20am The library will be conducting a Great Shakeout Drill as a way to prepare for an earthquake emergency. All patrons and staff members who are in the building will be expected to drop, cover and hold for one to two minutes. Announcements will be made on October 20 prior to 10:21 am to give advance notice of the duck, cover and hold directive. Patrons who do not feel comfortable with this drill should not come to the library during the timeframe of 10:00-10:45 am on Thursday October 20. Thank you for supporting the San Leandro Library in our endeavor to prepare for emergencies.

3 Ways to Contribute to the Time Capsule To celebrate San Leandro's 150th, the City excavated the time capsule that was buried for the city's centennial celebrations in 1972. The time capsule will have items added and reburied for San Leandro of 2072. Below are opportunities you have to contribute! Contribute ideas! Submit ideas for items that represent San Leandro of today via the submission form found at sanleandro.org/150 by October 15, 2022. Submit photos and stories for the 2022 Time Capsule Yearbook! Share your moments of today with San Leandro of 2072. We don't know what life will look like in 50 years. Those everyday moments document modern businesses, places, technology, and community which will probably change by 2072. Submit your digital pictures at sanleandro.org/150 by October 31, 2022. Write letters, notes, and doodles that will be included in the time capsule with our Notes to the Future program! Share what life is like today, your hopes for the future, or anything else you'd like to share. Check the library website for details and program dates.

Una Ofrenda Musical - A Musical Altar for our Muertos Wednesday, Nov. 2, 6:30pm You are invited to dance and sing with Cascada de Flores on a musical journey sharing Dia de Muertos traditions from Mexico and Central America, exploring the meaning of Day of the Dead (Dia de Muertos) with song, dance, tradition, personal stories and a large variety of musical instruments. Best for ages 4+, but all are welcome. Doors open at 6:20pm and will close if we reach posted room capacity.

VOX Books: Books that Talk! The San Leandro Public Library is excited to announce the launch of our new read-along books: VOX books! VOX books feature popular picture books with an MP3 player attached so you can read and listen to your favorite books all at once! These books are rechargeable and come in a variety of languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Korean, and Tagalog. Based on the popularity of our State-Library created Adult and Kids' Mental Health Kits, we're launching Teen Mental Health Kits, now available for checkout! Performance from Folclorico Colibrà Celebra! Join us at the San Leandro Public Library on Saturday, 10/8 for a performance from Folclorico Colibri to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. Folclorico Colibri is an LGBTQ folkloric group that shares traditional Mexican folkloric dance through performances and educational projects. The performance will be at the Main Library (300 Estudillo Ave.) from 2:00 pm - 2:45 pm. This is a free event for all ages. No registration is required. Call 510-577-3971 for questions.

Matinees at the SL History Museum 320 W. Estudillo Ave. 11:30 am- 12:30 pm: Watch the Incredible Journey of Butterflies. This documentary flies along with the monarch butterflies, visiting the spectacular locations they call home and meeting the dangers they encounter along the way. A discussion about Monarchs will follow the movie. After the film, CA Naturalist Susan Levenson will give a presentation on Monarch Butterflies. 1:30 pm- 3:30pm: Make Butterfly tin art and Milkweed seeds. Make a butterfly tin art project and get a free milkweed seed to plant at your home for the Monarch Butterflies.

Restrictive Covenant Program Information Session: Removing Racist Language from your Home's Deed Thursday, October 13, 5:30-6:30 at the San Leandro Main Library Join us for an informative presentation from the County Clerk-Recorder's office regarding law AB 1466. Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&Rs) is text in a home deed that describes the things a homeowner can and cannot do with the property. Due to discriminatory housing policies, racist language was written into and still exists in many CC&Rs for homes built before the late 1940s. Law AB1466 seeks to identify and redact this harmful language from the public record. Learn about the county's plan to accomplish this and what you can do if you know this language exists in your home's deed. Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act Program-info session Monday, Oct. 17, 6:00pm at the San Leandro Main Library Diane Jesus from Rubicon Programs of America's Job Center of California - Eden Area will give a comprehensive overview of the Workforce Innovation & Opportunity Act Program, including the resources and benefits offered to potential WIOA participants. This overview provides the steps job seekers will take to enroll in the program and eventually meet one-on-one with a counselor to discuss career goals and/or job searching strategies.
