With the month of November and the fall harvest season upon us, we honor Native American Heritage Month / Indigenous Peoples Month. What we now refer to as California was the most culturally diverse and populous area north of Mexico prior to the arrival of the Spanish and colonization. There were about 1,000 uniquely different tribes in the area of present day California. They spoke different languages, had different cultures, different ways, but still respected and cared for one another. The Ohlone tribes lived in the area now known as San Francisco and Richmond and south to Monterey Bay. Ohlone is a modern name that groups about 58 distinct tribes with distinct land areas under one name. Ohlone spoke eight different languages and were often multilingual as the different tribes were familiar with one another and spoke each other’s language. Prior to colonization by the Spanish, there were approximately 5,000 Ohlone people. In the eras that followed colonization that number went down to less than 100 people due to primarily to disease, mistreatment and murder, poor living conditions and a U.S. campaign of genocide. Although the years of colonization and genocide devastated all California native tribes, it is important to know that Ohlone and other local tribal peoples continue to live in the area now known as the Bay Area, as well as other parts of California and the United States. Thousands of years of traditions and culture have been passed down through ancestors no matter the difficulty. Throughout the month of November the library will be sharing selected book titles, online and local resources, plus local happenings through social media to honor Native American Heritage Month. Don't miss out - follow along. -San Leandro History Museum staff
