May 2022
A Message From the Library Director
San Leandro, like most cities in the United States, has a complex and less than perfect history when it comes to how people of color were treated. And just like many cities in America, San Leandro had implemented Federally backed housing discrimination practices known as Redlining, to keep people of color from owning homes and even from living in the community altogether. Thankfully, the Federal legislation that made Redlining possible and legal no longer exists. And while San Leandro has in many ways triumphed over these racist practices by being one of the most diverse cities in America, housing discrimination and its lasting impacts, whether purposeful or indirect, still exist.

The San Leandro History Museum has put together a Redlining and Housing Discrimination exhibit. The exhibit is intended to educate and acknowledge a somber part of our country’s history and San Leandro’s part in it. The exhibit will be at the Main Library and Museum this summer and continue at the Museum for at least the duration of 2022. In addition to the exhibit running in both locations, we are exploring hosting scholars, experts, and panelist discussions throughout 2022 regarding housing discrimination.

While this may not be a fun topic, it is an important topic, and we hope you find the exhibit and adjacent programming informative and impactful, and we hope you can lend your voice to community discussions regarding this important issue.

-Brian Simons, Library Director

Opening Soon: Redlining Exhibit at the
Museum & Main Library
The San Leandro History Museum & Library will soon launch a Redlining Exhibit that examines two specific aspects of housing discrimination that took place throughout the nation and in San Leandro: Redlining and the development of all-white suburban neighborhoods. The goal of this exhibit is to help us to better understand the housing discrimination and systemic racism that kept San Leandro an all-white community well into the 1980s. The exhibit will be on display at the San Leandro History Museum and the San Leandro Main Library in late May through the Summer.
