Library Operations Update
 
Milestone Programs  
 
We all know the importance of reading, but it’s tough to make time for it, especially in today’s world of 10,000 distractions. Just like setting a workout plan with milestones and goals that hold you accountable to exercise, a structured reading plan can do the same thing. We’ve seen how successful the summer library program has been for decades. And more recently, other programs have been created outside of and that can overlap with the summer library program.  If you want your child to flex their reading muscles more often, but don’t know where to begin, perhaps one of our year-round reading programs -- 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, 500 Books Before Middle School or 100 Books Before Graduation -- is the structure you/they need to get those reading muscles worked out. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Closure 
The Main and Manor Branch Libraries will be closed on Monday. January 16 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 
 
Play the Winter Reading Game
Play the Winter Reading Game and win prizes,  ice cream and more! 
Through Friday, January 27, 2023 
For Youth Ages 0-18 and Adult Ages 18+ 
 
It’s not too late to join the all-ages Winter Reading Game! Join online or pick up a gamecard from the Library. Complete the activities on the gamecard by reading or listening to books to earn small prizes or entry into our grand prize drawings! Youth who finish the gameboard earn a free scoop of Loard's ice cream. Special prizes for adults, too!

 Did you know? Reading books is exercise for your brain! Reading or listening to books can boost your mood, help you relax, improve your vocabulary and even make you kinder!  Join a free year-round reading program to earn prizes for reading.
 
Get in the Storytime Habit! 
 
Storytime is more than just fun - it is a great way to start getting your child ready to read, ready to learn, and ready for school.

Identifying and Interrupting Microaggressions Workshop 
Tuesday, January 10, 2023, 6:30-7:30pm

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) will present a workshop on Identifying and Interrupting Microaggressions. Learn how to effectively intervene when you witness a microaggression. This is a free event for Teens & Adults 16+.

All-Ages Community Service Day 
RESCHEDULED DATE: Sunday, January 29, 2:00-3:00pm

To honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service, join us at the Main and Manor Branch Libraries for a community service litter removal project. The Library will supply gloves, waste containers and litter pickers. All participants will earn a 1-hour community service credit.  
 
 Kids must be accompanied by an adult; all participants will need to sign a waiver.

Community Panel: Housing Discrimination, Diversity and Our Community  
Thursday, January 19, 6:00 pm -7:00 pm

Join us for a discussion on housing discrimination, diversity, and its impact on our community’s past, present, and future. We will have a community panel leading the conversation with time for question and answer from the audience.   
 
This program is part of a series related to “The History of Redlining and Housing Discrimination in San Leandro” exhibit currently on display at the Main Library and San Leandro History Museum.

Need help using your mobile device? The San Leandro Public Library will have Tech Tutorial classes on the basics of using Apple and Android devices! 
We will cover the basics of using your Apple device on Monday, 1/23, at 2 pm, and the basics of using your Android device on Thursday, 1/26, at 2 pm. These classes are for adults who want to learn about the basics of their mobile devices. 30 minutes will be dedicated to questions and one-on-one help. Space is limited
