As Clark County begins to see an increase in diagnosed cases of the COVID-19 virus, the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is taking steps to protect our customers, staff, volunteers, and community partners. At this time, all 25 Library District branches will remain open and operating on regular hours. As a precaution against the outbreak, however, the Library District announced today that effective immediately, it is canceling all group activities, programs, events, rentals of meeting rooms and performing arts centers, art gallery receptions, and community outreach activities through June 30. (During this period, library customers who are unable to return their materials due to illness or exposure to the virus, will not have to pay fines for overdue materials.) This strategy is in keeping with the social distancing guidelines recommended by the CDC to limit the spread of the virus. The CDC defines social distancing as “remaining out of congregate settings, avoiding mass gatherings, and maintaining distance (approximately 6 feet or 2 meters) from others.” FURTHER PRECAUTIONS IMPLEMENTED The Library District is also taking the following steps: - Increasing the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting at all library branches, including high-touch or shared surfaces.
- Ensuring hand sanitizers are available for staff, volunteers, and customers.
- Removing all high-touch items such as toys, robotics, LEGOs, DUPLOs, etc., and kits from the children’s area in all libraries.
PUBLIC HEALTH RECOMMENDATIONS Health experts are still learning about COVID-19, but currently, they believe it is spread via respiratory droplets from sneezing or coughing. Symptoms to watch for are fever, cough, or difficulty breathing. Keep yourself and your community healthy by: - Covering your mouth with a tissue or your upper sleeve when coughing or sneezing.
- Discarding used tissues immediately.
- Washing your hands frequently, for at least 20 seconds each time, with soap and water or use hand sanitizer that is 60-90% alcohol-based.
- Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Practicing social distancing (as defined previously) by keeping an optimal six-foot distance from other people.
- Staying home if you are not feeling well or are experiencing flu-like symptoms.
