York Public Library
September 2020 Newsletter
Dear friends,

September greetings! Another school year, albeit an unusual one, awaits many of our patrons and their families. The leaves of the trees on the Library lawn have begun to turn, but the weather isn't cool enough to keep us from enjoying lunch by the pond. We recently spotted a heron - maybe you've seen him/her on our Storybook Characters scavenger hunt through the Children's Garden? (We're also searching for a great gender-neutral name for him/her, if you have any suggestions.)

We're busy planning services, programs, and events for fall, a few of which are listed below. We have loved every minute of reconnecting with our patrons through curbside pickup and visits by appointment. As fall approaches, we'll explore other ways to open up safely. More on that soon - but in the meantime, enjoy the latest news from York Public Library.

Be well, and stay safe!

Welcome Brian Bliss, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Teacher and a New YPL Online Meditation Host
YPL is pleased to welcome Brian Bliss, a teacher of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), to our rotation of area practitioners who lead our online weekly meditation series. Supported by more than 600 scientific studies, MBSR is the world’s leading evidence-backed mindfulness program. Brian’s training is through the Mindfulness Center at Brown University's School of Public Health. Brown, a global leader in MBSR research and training, has partnered with the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, where Jon Kabat-Zinn first developed MBSR in 1979.

In his own words: "Mindfulness practice has transformed my relationship with every aspect of life. It has taught me to cultivate a kinder way of being in touch with my body, mind, and heart. My relationships have grown deeper and more supportive, and I'm very grateful to be able to share these teachings with you."

Brian’s website is blissmindfulness.com.

Tune in to weekly meditations with area practitioners every Wednesday at 4 p.m. To join a meditation, click here ahead of the session to participate via zoom.

Wonder Woman: Libraries' Newest Champion!
September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when libraries nationwide remind parents, caregivers, students and communities at large that signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning.

In this year’s theme, “Libraries are Wonderful,” libraries have a new champion: Wonder Woman. As Honorary Chair of Library Card Sign-Up Month, Wonder Woman reminds people of all ages of the power of a library card and the value of libraries.

Because you're receiving this email, chances are you already have a library card, but maybe - gasp - you know someone who hasn't discovered everything his/her local library has to offer!

Anyone who lives, works, or owns property in Cape Neddick and the Yorks qualifies for a free library card. Visitors can purchase a temporary or non-resident card for a modest fee. A library card gives you access to Minerva, a network of over 60 libraries with a shared catalog of more than 6 MILLION books, audiobooks, magazines, DVDs, downloadable audiobooks and eBooks. A YPL card also provides patrons access to our two new online platforms: Hoopla and RBDigital. Between the two, cardholders can check out thousands upon thousands of streaming films, music, and audiobooks as well as eBooks, comics, and magazines. Materials of all kinds - for all ages - all free. With a library card.

To obtain yours, email ypl@york.lib.me.us. Be sure to tell your non-library-card-holding friends; it's what Wonder Woman would want!

September READ WOKE

August's focus in Cicely Lewis's READ WOKE Challenge was Asian American Voices. Next up for the month of September: Diverse Abilities. Peruse the Challenge resources on Beanstack to find a great read, and check out YPL's book lists, too. Read at your own pace and take on the monthly challenges in any order you like. When you finish a book, simply log your Woke Reads in Beanstack and earn badges representing your commitment to exploring books with viewpoints and voices that differ from your own.

Have you been “Reading Woke” with YPL? Let us know how it's going: what you've learned, what you've liked reading so far... or send a selfie with your Woke Read!  We'd love to hear from you. Share your thoughts at ypl@york.lib.me.us.

Young Adult News
Maine Student Book Award
In the decades since the Maine Student Book Award (MSBA) was initiated, more and more students across Maine have expanded their reading horizons every school year. Students at participating schools are challenged to read the nominated books and vote for their favorite each spring.

Students in grades 4-8 who have read three or more MSBA books are eligible to cast their vote, a process that is organized through their school. (Visit the MSBA website for more information.)

The 2020/2021 nominations are in - all forty of them - and we expect many of our Young Adult patrons are itching to get their hands on them. York Public Library can help! Most of the nominated books are on our shelves, but if not, we have the power of Inter-Library Loan (ILL) at our disposal. Visit our online catalog to get started!
