Playspace Officially Opens on Earth Day
Pictured at ribbon-cutting: Jenny Strickmaker, Athens children's librarian; Ohio CAN collective members (who designed and are installing the space!) Erik Peterson & Jamie Betit (not pictured: Benjamin Stewart); ACPL director, Nick Tepe; and representing the Paxton family, Betsy Anderson & Julie Paxton (The Paxton Fund, a private donation to the libraries, made the playspace possible.)Ohio CAN represents a collaboration between Fern Hollow Farm LLC, Functional Integrated Fitness, and Ben Stewart Building LTD.
The playspace will evolve each year as plantings grow and is intended to be a community hub, integrating history, astronomy, native plants, pollinators, gardening, living structures, and vernacular architecture. And it's for all ages--parents and adults need play in their lives, too!
We've added youth mountain bikes for ages 8-12 to our Chauncey library, located near the Baileys Trail System. These bike additions were purchased thanks to a donation from the Economics of Poverty class at Ohio University that's worked with youth in the community for the last several years.
More exciting bike updates:
Look for Book-a-Bike coming soon to our Wells (Albany) branch! Stay tuned for more info. We're excited to add free bike checkouts to a 6th ACPL library location.
Patrons will soon be able to also borrow the newest bike addition at our Athens location, designed by senior Engineering students at Ohio University as a capstone project. In production for over a year because of the pandemic, this accessible bike ensures that a patron unable to operate a bike can still enjoy a ride with a person who can.
We're grateful to the Athens County Knitters who identified this need and raised funds for this project through their annual tea cozy silent auction at the last Steampunk Spectacle (They also raised funds to donate a tandem bicycle to the Athens library in 2019!)
