Season’s Greetings, NCLA Members! This is a busy time of year for everyone, but I’m already in the early phases of planning our 2021 Biennial Conference, again in Winston-Salem at the Benton Convention Center. I’m very excited that you have selected me as your Vice President/President-Elect. I bring many years of library experience to the table, and I also have conference planning experience. I began my career in public libraries, first at the Mauney Memorial Library in Kings Mountain as a part time assistant, then at Gaston County Public Library as a clerk in the Children’s Services department. After I received my MLIS at UNCG, I ventured over to Cleveland Community College for eight years as Technical Services Librarian. I finally made my way to Gaston College (yes, we are a community college) as Public Services Librarian. I have worn many hats over the years and have had some really good mentors along the way! I’m a 2008 alumna of the NCLA Leadership Institute, what a great experience that was! I served as “VP/P-E” back in 2013 for the North Carolina Community College Library Association (NCCCLA). We had a great conference in Wilmington that year at Cape Fear Community College. Though I do have experience, one person does not a good conference plan. Did I say that right? It takes a village, a team of excellent, dedicated people to plan and execute a great conference. So, will you join me? I’m looking for volunteers to be on my team! If you’re willing to help, complete this survey. We will begin meeting in February 2020. Committee chairs or their designees are strongly encouraged to attend all meetings. Our initial meetings will be virtual and later on we will have some face-to-face meetings. Our first order of business will be to decide on a theme. If you have questions, shoot me an e-mail at ncla.vicepresident@gmail.com. I wish each of you a safe, wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Julie Humphrey Assistant Director, Reference & Technical Services Durham Tech Library 1. What was the first library job you had that made the little voice in your head go, “Yes—I have found the profession for me!” After graduating with my Bachelor’s from Appalachian State University, I remained in Boone and worked at the Watauga County Public Library as a Circulation Assistant. The librarians and Library Director at the time, Rhea Hebert, encouraged me to pursue my MLS. Seeing their passion for library work and the fulfillment they had in their jobs inspired me to make a career in this profession. 2. What part of your job keeps you going to work every day? How do you continue to find inspiration and passion in the library field? I continue to be amazed and inspired by the community college students who I have the pleasure of working with. I am also supported by the incredible staff on my team. Their ideas and enthusiasm keep me engaged every day. While working hard to serve Durham Tech’s students, faculty, and staff we also have fun with programs and activities. I find inspiration and learn new ideas at conferences and workshops, by reading library publications and through NCLA and NCCCCLA (North Carolina Community College Library Association). 3. Who are your library heroes in North Carolina and beyond? Irene Laube, my mentor and former Dean of Durham Tech Library, now retired. We worked together for sixteen years and I am grateful for all that I learned under her leadership. I have always appreciated her advocacy and support. Kelley Lawton, Head, East Campus Libraries at Duke University. As an intern at Lilly Library in the early 2000’s, Kelley taught me valuable library instruction skills and the fundamentals of reference work. She has always been a wonderful leader, passionate librarian, and an inspiration to me. Michael Crumpton, Assistant Dean for the University Libraries, UNCG, and current NCLA President. His support of community college librarianship and the NCLA Leadership Institute have meant so much to me in my career. Samantha O’Connor, Educational Resources Librarian at Central Carolina Community College. She is one of the most innovative and creative librarians I know. She has shared many great ideas with me over the years related to library instruction, craft programming, and online tutorials. My many wonderful colleagues from the 2012 NCLA Leadership Institute: Catherine Tinglestad, Heather Greer Klein, Katy Webb, Jennifer Hanft, Amy Harris Houk, and Jason Rogers. I also greatly admire these national library superstars : Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress and Julie Todaro, Dean of Library Services at Austin Community College and former ALA president. 4. Tell us a little about your interests and hobbies outside of the library. I love to travel and have a goal of visiting and experiencing all 50 states in the next five years. I have about 10 states remaining to visit. I also dream of traveling to all the continents and as many different countries as possible! I enjoy gardening and find happiness digging in the dirt. I grow flowers, vegetables, perennials, shrubs, and trees. I love visiting botanical gardens and plant conservatories in my travels. I also find such inspiration and joy in visiting art museums, art galleries, and sculpture gardens. I enjoy swimming and try to do one or two open water swim races per year.
