As summer starts to wind down, things are ramping up in anticipation of our conference in October. Now is a good time to update your membership profile in Wild Apricot and get registered for the conference. Don’t forget to check out the special events and volunteer opportunities. The conference experience is about you, by you and because of you, so make sure we see you there. I want to share some notes from the Executive Board meeting at the end of July: - Look for an email link soon regarding elections for the next biennial of executive officers. Call outs for candidates as well as links for elections for the sections are also being pushed out. Thanks to all of you who are on ballets. Please vote and support these candidates.
- We have appointed a part-time systems administrator, Rachel to help us manage and maintain the new system for membership. Rachel will be on the other end of nclaonline@gmail.com and will route your questions appropriately. We have also decided not to renew the office telephone so please use email as your primary means of contact. Executive board emails and phones are listed on the website if needed.
- We have appointed Siobhan Loendorf as our new ALA Chapter Councilor to complete Lynda Kellam’s term of office and Gerald Holmes as our SELA rep to finish Wanda Brown’s term as she performs her duties as ALA President. Thanks to you two for stepping up.
It has been a busy year full of transition and change. This will make us stronger and more efficient going forward. Please be patient as we work through the details of communication, software and website changes, and event planning. There are programs and services planned at conference to give you a better look at what’s ahead, don’t miss it!! Mike

Chad Haefele Head of User Experience and Assessment The University of Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 1. What was the first library job you had that made the little voice in your head go, “Yes—I have found the profession for me!” Mine came pretty early – I’ve never had a job outside of libraries. When I was in high school & college I shelved books and worked at the circ desk at my local public library, and then I went straight into grad school. Those early public service roles are what really hooked me and made me realize I loved connecting people with information. And once I got into libraries, I learned that User Experience (UX) is a field that overlaps with a ton of what libraries & information science are all about. When I got to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill University Libraries, I was lucky and had the opportunity to move my work more toward the UX end of things. I’ve never been happier. 2. What part of your job keeps you going to work every day? How do you continue to find inspiration and passion in the library field? I’m always amazed by everyone’s willingness to share knowledge and expertise, even across libraries and between completely different types of libraries. We’re all here to serve our users & patrons, and there’s always somebody doing something new & interesting. UX in libraries is a small but growing corner, filled with brilliant people. I also get energized any time I talk to our users about how they interact with library collections, spaces, staff, and services. Hearing about their work, in their own words, makes our impact as an organization pretty clear. And we can always find a way to make something better for them! 3. Who are your library heroes in North Carolina and beyond? I might be biased by physical location, but I look up to everyone at our TRLN partners – Duke, NC Central, & NC State Libraries. We recently built a brand new collaborative library catalog (ours is here) together, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. 4. Tell us a little about your interests and hobbies outside of the library. I have a big soft spot for Disney’s theme parks. Disney’s often problematic as a corporation, so I get a bit conflicted, but the way they craft the User Experience for visitors to their parks is second to none. I follow even the smallest news about changes to Disney World & beyond. I’m also training to run the Star Wars half marathon at Disney World next April. I have a long way to go, but I’m very excited. And I collect movie posters & prints, though I’ve completely run out of wall space and might have to do a purge soon. My favorite is an original theater poster from The Rocketeer in art deco style (visible on the movie’s Wikipedia page).
