The Road
by Cormac McCarthy
What it's about: Cormac McCarthy's The Road is probably the best-known post-apocalyptic novel written in the last few years -- it won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and was made into a movie starring Viggo Mortensen. In a devastated world, a father and his young son make their way through the ruins of an unrecognizable American landscape, longing for normality and searching for means of survival. On this violent, horrific Earth, the sun is obscured by ash and the land is dead; there are few survivors, and many have resorted to cannibalism. McCarthy's bleak but elegant writing will remind Richard Matheson's fans of his works.
