Goes along with our disaster island theme this month.
First you are going to construct your volcano. Place a thin plastic container (small water bottle is good) in a 9x12 pan. Now take your Legos and build a volcano shape all around the bottle. Wide at the bottom, skinny at the top.
Secondly we will make the volcano erupt.
you need: 1/4 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup vinegar, a couple of drops of dish soap, food coloring is optional
Carefully put the baking soda in the bottle/container.
in a measuring cup with a spout, mix together the 1/4 cup vinegar with 2-3 drops of dish soap and 1-2 drops of food coloring if using.
Be ready for a mess.
Gently pour the vinegar mixture into the bottle and watch the foam flow over and around your Lego Volcano.
This is a chemical reaction! When an acid and a base mix they form a gas called carbon dioxide. Here the vinegar is the acid and the baking soda is the base. The soap just makes in more foamy.
You can try it without and see what you get.
